The 123rd Annual National Congress Highlights of the opening business session included a spirited welcome from Kansas City Mayor Sly James, the announcement of a major gift from Dr. Estelle H. Rosenblum, and greetings from the DAR, C.A.R. and the American Legion. Rosenblum, joined by members of her family, presented a $125,000 bequest by her late husband, James E. Hesse, a NMSSAR Compatriot, genealogist and color guard member. The front mezzanine level of the SAR Genealogical Research Library will be named in Hesse's memory. Dr. Estelle Rosenblum, with her sister, Tami, son Paul, and daughter Gayle, accepted a certificate of appreciation and induction as a George Washington Fellow for her and her family's generous support of The Center for Advancing America's Heritage and the George Washington Foundation. New Officers Elected Greetings were delivered by President General Lynn F. Young, a 36-year DAR member who has served DAR in many national, state and local roles. This includes serving from 2006-09 as State Regent of Texas, the largest DAR State Society with more than 17,000 members and 195 chapters. Young is the first Texan in the DAR's 123-year history to be elected to the top post. Kim Harrison of Ancestry.com received the Martha Washington Medal. She has been significantly involved with the development of Operation Ancestor Search (OAS) since its inception and in cultivating the relationship between the SAR and Ancestry.com, the OAS program's major national sponsor. Pictured with Harrison are President General Stephen A. Leishman of Delaware, left, and Carl Bedell, SAR-OAS Committee co-chairman, of Arlington, Va. 6 In the only contested election of the Congress, Librarian General Michael Wells was re-elected. Elected by acclamation were President General Joseph W. Dooley (Va.), Secretary General Lindsey C. Brock (Fla.), Treasurer General Judge Thomas E. Lawrence (Texas), Chancellor General John Dodd (Calif.), Genealogist General Larry P. Cornwell (Ala.), Registrar General J. Michael Tomme Sr. (Ga.), Historian General Col. Robert Forrest Towns (Ga.), Surgeon General Dr. Abraham Ruddell Byrd III (Ariz.) and Chaplain General Rt. Rev. Louis V. Carlson Jr. (Calif.). Later, PG Dooley announced his appointments to the Executive Committee as outlined in the NSSAR bylaws: President General Stephen A. Leishman (2012-13), Timothy Edward Ward (OHSSAR), John T. Manning (MASSAR) and Mark S. Brennan Sr. (VASSAR). Each year, the SAR gladly supports the national program of the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution. This year was no exception as President General Stephen A. Leishman presented C.A.R. National President Caitlin Collins with a check. Collins and Senior National President Hans Jackson (second from right) unveiled the 201314 theme, Pursuit of Happiness, in which the C.A.R. will support Student Veterans of America (www.studentveterans.org), a nonprofit organization, in providing educational scholarships and support to veterans who are re-entering the mainstream college life.
