CALIFORNIA SOCIETY Members of the CASSAR Ladies Auxiliary gathered for a performance of the Sua Traditional Korean Dance Troupe. The event took place during the CASSAR's 138th Annual Spring Meeting at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel in Ventura, Calif. Ladies Auxiliary officers attending were President Cyndy Bigbee, 1st Vice President Karen Faulkinbury, 2nd Vice President Connie Barker, Secretary Karen Carlson, Treasurer Lisa Gregory and Historian Coreena Ross. The keynote speaker was Compatriot Philip L. Hinshaw, CASSAR vice president for membership. Mayor Bob Filner, the 35th mayor of San Diego, addressed the audience and reflected on his appreciation of early California history gained during his 20 years as a history professor at San Diego State University. The Battle of San Diego Bay occurred on March 17, 1803, when the American brig Lelia Byrd entered San Diego Bay to buy sea otter pelts. The Spanish government forbade such trading, but the Americans persisted. Some crewmen were captured at the beach but were able to escape or were released. An hour later, Fort Guijarros fired its 9-pound cannons to prevent the Lelia Byrd from sailing out of San Diego Bay. The ship's crew mounted six 3-pound swivel guns and fired several shots at the fort. A hat was waved and both parties ceased firing, bringing the battle to a peaceful ending. Hinshaw's presentation focused on Spain's involvement in, and contribution to, the American Revolution. The role of the San Diego Presidio in Spain's war against Great Britain is recognized by a plaque in Presidio Park commemorating the financial contribution of the Presidio Soldados (soldiers) and Native Americans to Spain's war effort.
