ALABAMA SOCIETY The Tennessee Valley Chapter Color Guard participated in a State Color Guard event at the Rock Springs Presbyterian Church at Mount Hope in Lawrence County, Ala. Organized by the Shoals Chapter of the ALSSAR, the event honored five Revolutionary War soldiers buried in the Rock Springs Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The soldiers are Pvt. William Lackey of the Virginia and South Carolina Continental Line, Pvt. Abraham Horton of the Pennsylvania Continental Line, Capt. Samuel McGaughey of the North Carolina Militia, Pvt. John McWhorter of the North Carolina Militia and Hugh Stephenson, who fought alongside his father at the battle of Kings Mountain at age 15. Also participating in the ceremony were the George Colbert Chapter NSDAR of Tuscumbia, Ala., and the Stephens Chapter NSDAR of Decatur, Ala. ALSSAR President Rev. Marvin Vickers spoke at the ceremony. The Shoals Post of the American Legion and area Boy Scouts also participated in the event. Birmingham Chapter The Birmingham Chapter of the ALSSAR, the Alabama Society of NSSAR, the DAR, the Pinson Historical Society, and friends and descendants of Revolutionary War soldier Lt. Edward Tatum joined in a grave-marking ceremony at the Baird-Tatum Cemetery in Pinson, Ala., June 8 to mark the grave with an SAR marker. Tatum's gravestone had been damaged by a falling giant oak limb during a storm. The grave and the marker had to be professionally restored. Tatum, of Henry County, Virginia, served in the Virginia Militia under the command of Col. Abram Penn and fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, N.C., in March 1781. Eutaw Springs, S.C., and at Yorktown, where Lord Cornwallis surrendered his command. Additionally, Tatum furnished supplies in assistance of the Revolution on April 23, 1782. Approximately 80 people attended the ceremony and the following reception hosted by the Pinson Historical Society. Chapter Color Guard members Jim Maples, Bob Anderson, Harrell Phillips, Otha "Skeet" Vaughn and Bob Baccus. The photo shows the Color Guard presenting the colors at the beginning of the performance during the playing of the National Anthem. Tennessee Valley Chapter The Desoto Trace Chapter presented the SAR Wounded Warrior Award Medallion and Certificate to Henry Koonce, a Purple Heart recipient, during its June 8 meeting in Hot Springs. ARSSAR President Jerry Montgomery made the presentations to the Korean War veteran and his wife, Shirley. Chapter Chaplain Layne Wagoner read Koonce's impressive biography. In a tearful reply, Koonce accepted the honor to the applause of all the attendees. On Dec. 31, 2012, the Tennessee Valley Chapter Color Guard presented the colors in connection with the playing of the National Anthem at the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra's New Year's Performance "The American Way." The symphony performed jointly with the U.S. Army Material Command Band from Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala.
