Halifax Resolves Chapter The Halifax Resolves Chapter held its annual celebration of adoption of the Halifax Resolves April 6 at the site of the Colonial Courthouse in Halifax. The day began with a flag-retirement ceremony sponsored by the chapter and the Elizabeth Montfort Ashe Chapter of the North Carolina Society, DAR. They were assisted by the NCSSAR Combined Color Guard and retired approximately 80 U.S. flags with full honors before burying the ashes in the Colonial Cemetery. Following a luncheon at the Royal Hart Masonic Lodge, the 237th Anniversary Celebration of the Adoption of the Halifax Resolves continued at the Colonial Courthouse site. The colors were presented by the Roanoke Rapids High School JROTC and the Combined NCSSAR Color Guard. Following the Invocation by Halifax Resolves Chaplain Rev. Duncan Jones, and Chapter President Ken Wilson led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and the SAR Pledge. Dr. Samuel C. Powell, president of the SAR Foundation, presented the Halifax Resolves in the same manner it was presented originally. NCSSAR President Glenn Sappie brought greetings and thanked all the participants and the public for attending. Compatriot Grady Hall, president of the Salisbury Chapter, introduced 40 Dewey R. Preslar, grand master of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina, A.F. & A.M., who brought greetings from the Masons. Dr. Scott M. Kennedy, color guard commander and past treasurer of the Raleigh Chapter NCSSAR, was the keynote speaker and discussed the events that led to the creation and adoption of the Halifax Resolves. Lower Cape Fear Chapter Strong community support highlighted the 30th annual Air Force JROTC Honors/Awards Night. Members of respective fraternal and military support organizations presented medals, ribbons and certificates to exceptional cadets in the gymnasium at E.A. Laney High School. The chapter, represented by Compatriot Bob Avent, presented honors to Cadet Danielle Maynard. Mecklenburg Chapter President Thomas Jefferson, our third president, visited Charlotte, N.C., to host a community dinner of 170 guests on Feb. 21 as part of the Mecklenburg Chapter's public dinner and community outreach series. "The honor of having President Jefferson host a dinner for 170 guests and hear his stories and accounts of the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, serving as a founding member of the first Continental Congress, and serving as the governor of Virginia during the Revolutionary War is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Tom Phlegar, program chairman. "President Jefferson's interaction with the audience and his amazing ability to recount his role in numerous historical events from a first-person point of view delighted and entertained everybody." Professional historical actor, producer and director Bill Barker portrayed Jefferson. "Barker portrays Jefferson at Colonial Williamsburg, and he has made numerous appearances at Independence Hall, the White House, the Palace of Versailles and even in the Broadway musical 1776," said Phlegar. Jefferson answered questions from the audience, in particular, from children, which included, "Who is your favorite person from the Revolutionary War?" "I have visited your home in Virginia, and I am curious about the dumbwaiter," and, "Is this your first trip to Charlotte?" Jefferson responded that George Washington was, indeed, his favorite person, that he invented the dumbwaiter as a means to bring food up from the kitchen to his dining guests, and that this was his first trip to Charlotte-town, as Mr. President referred to the city. Special guests for the evening included Registrar General and National Color Guard Commander Mike Tomme and his wife, Cilla; Vice President General South Atlantic District Steve Pittard; and NCSSAR President Glenn Sappie.
