Inaugural Molly Pitcher Medal Recipients I t was felt that many women who are the wives, daughters, sisters, girlfriends, and other female relatives and companions of SAR Color Guardsmen routinely and with great dedication support their SAR Color Guardsmen and the SAR Color Guard. Marty Thurmond tops first group to be honored during Congress Because of this, the NSSAR Color Guard Committee approved criteria for, and authorized the Molly Pitcher Medal on Sept. 28, 2012. The medal may be awarded to women who have supported the SAR Color Guard at the state, district and national levels. The medal, available only in miniature, is silver in color with a likeness of Molly Pitcher. To SUMMER 2013 earn the Molly Pitcher Medal, a woman must be present at, and support, the SAR Color Guard at qualifying SAR Color Guard events. The same events that count toward earning the SAR Silver Color Guard Medal for SAR Color Guardsmen shall also count toward earning the Molly Pitcher Medal. At the 2013 Congress in Kansas City, the first of these medals were awarded. The initial one was presented Molly Pitcher posthumously to Georgian Marty Thurmond for her dedication and service to the Color Guard on the state and national level. Her husband, George, accepted this award.
