NSSAR Secretary General Joseph Dooley, NSSAR Trustees Mark Brennan and Henry P. "Phil" Williams, VASSAR President Kent Webber, VASSAR officers and VASSAR, DAR and C.A.R. chapter representatives. WASHINGTON SOCIETY The Washington Society Color Guard participated in what it believes was the first instance of a combined SAR and DAR Color Guard in a major West Coast parade—the Armed Forces Day Parade on May 18 in Bremerton, Wash. This seven-soldier color guard combined three chapters of the WASSAR and WSSDAR. Participating, below from left, CG Ensign Paul Adan, Alexander Hamilton Chapter; CG Capt. Doug Nelson, John Paul Jones Chapter; CG Capt. Lee Thomasson, Alexander Hamilton Chapter; CG 1st Lt. Mick Hersey, John Paul Jones Chapter; CG member Jane Ritchey, "Betsy Ross," Elizabeth Ellington Chapter DAR; CG member Kelli Gracia, "Molly Pitcher," Elizabeth Ellington Chapter DAR; and (not pictured) CG Cmdr. Lt. Col. Bob O'Neal, Alexander Hamilton Chapter. This is the largest Armed Forces Day parade on the West Coast, with 140 units and 20,000 cheering spectators in this patriotic Navy port. The DAR provided breakfast in the assembly area. Helping the group celebrate were 23 U.S. Navy sailors from the submarine USS Kentucky (Kentucky Blue Team, who carried 22 of our historic American Revolution-era flags). Several cars carrying DAR and C.A.R. families followed the color guard. SUMMER 2013 John Paul Jones Chapter Chapter members were canvassing local neighborhoods for homes honorably flying the American flag in honor of Patriots Day, April 15, and happened upon a home in East Bremerton that belongs to one of the area's great military patriots—John Druse "Bud" Hawk, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient. "I was speaking with the woman who answered the door and telling her we'd like to present them with a Flag Certificate from SAR for honorably flying the flag. The woman looked over at a man sitting in nearby a chair and asked, 'Bud … would you like to receive a Flag Certificate?' " said Compatriot Mick Hersey. "I then noticed a Medal of Honor citation hanging on the wall." Hersey, along with former Chapter President Doug Nelson, delivered the certificate to Hawk's home a few days later. "It really made our day, and proved you never know who you'll meet out in the community," Hersey said. WYOMING SOCIETY In May, VPG Joe Harris (Intermountain West) and his wife, Gail, attended WYSSAR's annual convention in Casper as guests of honor. Harris was the keynote speaker, providing a vibrant history of the National Headquarters and the SAR Foundation. During the meeting, the WYSSAR made a special presentation for outstanding community service and fire safety to the Casper Natrona High School Junior ROTC program. In November 2012, JROTC cadets, led by their commanding officer, retired Army Lt. Col. Peter Schmotzer, assisted the Bureau of Land Management in responding to the 24-square-mile Casper Mountain fire. The JROTC students helped restore the area by building erosion barriers and planting trees. Their hard work earned the respect and praise of the BLM Casper field manager. Schmotzer provided a spirited update on his JROTC program, the cornerstone of which is motivating his students to be exemplary citizens. He emphasized that Presenting an SAR Fire Safety Commendation this is a shared leader- Certificate to the Casper Natrona High School ship goal of the JROTC JROTC program are, from left, retired Judge Robert programs across the Allen, president; Cadet Morgan Wood; Cadet state.
