efforts have produced 30 student essays and 10 chapter-level winners in the last two years. Mike Elston, chair of VASSAR's Knight Essay Contest, presented Williams with the award. The Thomas Nelson Jr. Chapter coordinated the event and donated $450 to support monetary awards for the NSSAR Knight Essay Contest. Williamsburg Chapter UTAH SOCIETY On the anniversary date of the famous "shot heard 'round the world," members of the UTSSAR Color Guard gathered for a photo—taking the opportunity after firing upon the invaders at the community park in Kaysville, Utah. UTSSAR 1st VP Douglas R. McGregor (in civilian clothes, above) commandeered the park's microphone to explain to the hundreds of kids and parents the significance of April 19, 1775. Intermountain District VPG Joe Harris (militia garb) appeared on the field, but only after the Utah Continental Line marched into position to face the miffed onlookers. VIRGINIA SOCIETY On April 12, representatives from the Culpepper Minute Men, Dan River, 44 Fairfax Resolves, James Monroe, Norfolk, Thomas Nelson Jr. and Williamsburg chapters gathered at Peninsula Catholic High School in Newport News, Va., to honor students from the school who were selected as their chapter entries in the VASSAR 2013 Knight Essay Contest. The seven chapter winners were recognized with a neck ribbon, medallion and certificate. All received additional monetary awards of $100-$150. Participants not selected as chapter winners were awarded certificates of participation. The chapter winners gathered with Principal Ann Franklyn and AP history teacher Anthony Williams for a photograph, below. Williams also was recognized with the Thomas Jefferson Medal for his support of the Society's Knight Essay Contest. He is the first recipient of this award outside our Society. His The Williamsburg Chapter hosted the May 4 dedication of an SAR plaque inside historic Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, Va. The plaque was dedicated to patriots buried at Bruton Parish Church— namely Capt. David Mead Randolph, Edmund Pendleton and John Blair. Randolph was a captain in the 1st Virginia Regiment. Pendleton was a member of the Continental Congress and president of the 1788 Virginia Ratification Convention. Blair was a Virginia delegate to the Constitutional Convention and is one of three Virginia signers of the U.S. Constitution. The dedication participants, opposite page, included SAR MAGAZINE
