WINTER 2014-2015 39 I urge all of you to download the Mount Vernon Washington's Portrait info and request form, and make it available to your local school, public library or government offices. You can access the information and form at www. mountvernon.org/educational-resources/for-teachers/george- washington-portrait-request/ . John Paul Jones Chapter On Oct. 16, 2014, Flag Chairman Marion "Mick" Hersey instructed several Wolf Cubs, below, under the leadership of Cathy Bonsell from Pack 4506, Peace Lutheran Church, in the proper respect, care and folding of the American flag. They, along with their parents and some of their siblings, met at the Ivy Green Cemetery in Bremerton, Wash., at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Hersey also gave them a history of the cemetery and famous areas and residents buried there. PPP For the last six months, Captain John Paul Jones Chapter flag chairman Marion "Mick" Hersey worked with the school board and staff of the new John D. "Bud " Hawk Elementary School at Jackson Park, Bremerton, Wash., ensuring Bud's dream came to fruition. That was the naming of a school honoring his legacy. Hersey presented the new school with the last flag that was flown over Hawk's house as well as photos for the display case. Hawk's daughter, Marilyn Harrelson, presented Hawk Elementary with his Medal of Honor Flag and a copy of his citation and photo from when President Harry Truman came to Olympia, Wash., to present the Medal of Honor to him. Fittingly, the school's mascot name is "Patriot." It was a rousing ceremony that included the children singing "America the Beautiful." One surprising moment came when U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer asked how many children had parents or relatives currently serving in the Armed Forces, and almost 75 percent of the kids raised their hand. At the end of the ceremony, guests and students surrounded the flagpole while Hersey shared how he had met this man who became a fellow compatriot and was known affectionately as Bud. A new American flag was presented by the WASSAR Color Guard along with a Flag Certificate, and the flag was raised over the school in Hawk's honor and in honor of past Washington U.S. Sen. Henry M. "Scoop" Jackson. WISCONSIN SOCIETY WISSAR Color Guard members posed for a photo, above, with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker on Veterans Day. The color guard has participated in the Veterans Day celebration for many years. Joining the color guard were members of the VFW, American Legion and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. [Photo by Billy Muether] WYOMING SOCIETY Members and spouses of the WYSSAR and Wyoming Society Daughters of the American Revolution met in Cheyenne, Wyo., for a fellowship lunch in August 2014. The fellowship lunch gave attendees the opportunity to meet and update one another on projects and future events. State Society President David Thompson announced the national awards presented to the WYSSAR at the 124th Congress in July: the President General's Retention Challenge Initiative (more than 95 percent retention during 2013-2014); the Houston Chapter Award to the State Society with the largest percentage of new members transferred from the C.A.R.; and the DAR/SAR Membership Award to the State DAR Society recruiting the most new SAR members. President Thompson presented the NSSAR check for $500 accompanying this award to State Regent Susan Haines. Compatriot Edward Thompson Jr. was awarded the Silver Roger Sherman Medal for his long, faithful support to WYSSAR for the past 27 years. Wyoming Society DAR member Theresa Narotzky received the Martha Washington Medal for her outstanding support to the WYSSAR as DAR Liaison. Attendees paid tribute to past members of both societies with a moment of silence, with State DAR Chaplain Janette Chambers giving the invocation. Thompson presented an eagle statuette to Haines for her outstanding support of the State Society, and he provided the new WYSSAR informational pamphlet to members of both societies for use across the state. Compatriot Fred Snelson and his wife traveled from Cody, Wyo., for the lunch. Snelson responded to the state president's 2014 initiative to build the first chapter in the 106-year history of the WYSSAR. Shortly after the fellowship lunch, members in the Cody area met and put together The Big Horn Basin Chapter. New Chapter President Keith Francik coordinated the application for charter with Thompson, who wrote to the NSSAR President General announcing this milestone for the Society.
