30 SAR MAGAZINE Northern Nevada Chapter Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, a compatriot of the Northern Nevada Chapter, NVSSAR, was presented with the NSSAR War Service Medal on Oct. 9, 2014, by David Hess, the Northern Nevada Chapter president. The War Service Medal was given to Crowell for his wartime service in Vietnam as a U.S. Navy offcer. The ceremony was held at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial on the State Capitol Grounds in Carson City. In speaking of his appreciation of the award, Crowell noted that many veterans returning from Vietnam were met with widespread disrespect and name-calling by vocal members of the public. As a result of his own negative experiences in such confrontations, he has made intentional efforts to imbue the public with a sense of respect for the nation's veterans, regardless of their individual sentiments regarding the country's involvement in war or conficts. In 1985, as a retired Navy captain, Crowell became the charter president of the Navy League's Carson City Council and has always been involved in veterans' issues and causes in northern Nevada. Other Northern Nevada Chapter compatriots who shared in the presentation were retired U.S. Army Col. Secretary- Treasurer Edward Carson; Brian Worcester, NVSSAR trustee and past VPG, Western District; and Roger Linscott, NVSSAR president. NEW HAMPSHIRE SOCIETY The NHSSAR's newest member, 18-year-old John Paul Zafiris, and his dad, John Zafiris, left, participated in filming a membership promotional video that features our members sharing their perspectives on joining the SAR. The video may be seen at NHSSAR.org . PPP Forty-year member Howard Leonard, center, was one of our veterans honored at the Veterans Appreciation Lunch. Our two new 18-year-old members—John Paul Zafiris III, left, and Connor Liam Jackson, right—partici- pated in the salute. PPP NHSSAR members, present and future, posed at a joint SAR, DAR and C.A.R. Veterans Day meeting, below. The NHSSAR has been hosting a Veterans Appreciation Luncheon for more than two decades. In the late 1990s, Hans Jackson started bringing the John Stark Society C.A.R. members to the luncheon to thank the veterans in attendance, and in the last four years, the Molly Stark Chapter DAR has been joined them. NEW JERSEY SOCIETY Jockey Hollow Chapter Gayle Ann Livecchia and U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance led an effort to get a new headstone for Maj. Samuel Sayer. The chapter participated in the dedication, along with several guests and Jan Williams, the cultural and historic resources specialist for Morris County, N.J. EMPIRE STATE (NEW YORK) SOCIETY On Oct. 21, 2014, Leslie Dimmling, regent of the Colonel Aaron Ogden Chapter, NSDAR, and Kathleen Vermaelen, president of the Ladies Auxiliary Long Island Chapter, SAR, presented a check for $1,360 to The Veterans Place, a shelter for homeless veterans run by the Suffolk County United Veterans in Yaphank, N.Y. Donations were raised during the Sept. 13 Liberty Luncheon, an annual Long Island DAR-SAR networking event. The Col. Aaron Ogden Chapter, NSDAR; Southampton Colony Chapter, NSDAR; and Long Island Chapter, SAR, hosted the event. In addition to providing vital emergency, transitional and permanent shelter for veterans, the Suffolk County United Veterans helps vet- erans attain government services and work toward sobriety and self-suffi- ciency. More information about the group may be found at www.scuv.org . Syracuse Chapter The Syracuse Chapter of the ESSSAR participated in the Nov. 8, 2014, Veterans Day Parade at the State Fair Grounds in Syracuse, N.Y. The expo featured great exhibits of interest to our veterans and active-duty military personnel, including an informational display table manned by members of the Syracuse Chapter of the ESSSAR and of other organizations that help veterans and soldiers. More than 6,000 people came to watch the parade and tour the expo. From left, Col.
