22 SAR MAGAZINE ALABAMA SOCIETY General Richard Montgomery Chapter General Richard Montgomery Chapter Compatriot Felton Mitchell, standing, with Medal of Honor recipient, retired U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie Adkins. Adkins was awarded the Medal of Honor at the White House by President Barack Obama on Sept. 15, 2014, for his heroism in Vietnam in 1966. Adkins was then honored with a ceremony at the Opelika, Ala., City Hall on Veterans Day, which was followed by a reception at the Museum of East Alabama in Opelika. Mitchell is a member of the museum's board of directors. ARIZONA SOCIETY Tucson Chapter Early preparations for the Summerhaven July 4, 2014, parade were under cool temperatures and overcast skies. At the start of the parade, the clouds decided to open up and soak the assembled visitors and parade participants. Everyone seemed to enjoy the rain, and it made for an easy, though soggy, journey along the parade route. The color guard not only started the parade in the No. 1 position but finished the parade as the First Place Patriotic Entry. Those marching were: Rudy Byrd, Rick Collins, Lance Dickinson, Al Niemeyer, Jim Williamson, and drummer John Patla, along with Ladies Auxiliary members Bette Dickinson and Theresa Williamson. CALIFORNIA SOCIETY On Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, a joint California Society Color Guard of compatriots from the Harbor and Orange County chapters participated in Wreaths Across America at Memory Garden Memorial Park and Mortuary in Brea, Calif. This was the sixth annual Wreaths Across America ceremony held at the Veterans' Field of Honor at Memory Garden Memorial Park, which has more than 3,000 veterans' graves. The ceremony was co-sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America and the CASSAR. The keynote speaker was Elaine Brattain of the American Gold Star Mothers, Saddleback Valley. Compatriots participating in the event were President General Larry J. Magerkurth (2011-2012), Chancellor General John Dodd, former Chaplain General and current CASSAR Chaplain Rt. Rev. Louis V. Carlson Jr., Orange County Chapter Chaplain Richard Adams and Orange County Chapter President Daniel Shippey (portraying Gen. George Washington). Members of the color guard were Jim Fosdyck, James Gill, Kent Gregory, Karl Jacobs, Dan McKelvie, John Ferris and Dan Henry. Other participants in the program included the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society, Pipes and Drums and the Los Angeles Fifes & Drums. Wreaths were presented by representatives of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Air Force, POW/MIA, Civil Air Patrol, CASSAR Orange County and Harbor chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and the Girl Scouts of America. News stories about state and chapter events appearing here and elsewhere in the magazine are prepared from materials submitted through a variety of means, including press releases and newsletters (which should be directed to the Editor at the address shown on page 2). Please note the deadlines below. Compatriots are encouraged to sub- mit ideas for historical feature articles they would like to write. Each will be given careful consideration. Deadlines: Winter (February) Dec. 15; Spring (May) March 15; Summer (August) June 15; Fall (November) Sept. 15.
