The six are: William Biggs, John Nix, Isham Randle, Richard Randle, Henry Thornhill and Josias Wright. ILSSAR President Thomas Ashby helped unveil the plaque. He said the marker program "is being done so that Glen Carbon and other communities with Revolutionary War Patriots interred near them might know of the sacrifices and service of these heroes. We take pride that these founding fathers of our country brought their families to Glen Carbon to help perpetuate the American ideal. "We dedicate this monument to those brave heroes, recognizing their marvelous contributions to creating the United States of America as a gift to the citizens of Glen Carbon, who are honored by these Patriots' eternal presence," he said. Father Nicholas Finley, himself a veteran, praised the SAR for all its members do in remembering those who served. Members of the chapter provided the color guard, and six of them read biographies of the Patriots. Granite City resident Don Bradford sang "God Bless America." Chapter President Jim DeGroff thanked Steve Ellsworth State Farm Insurance, Cassens Auto Sales, the Edwardsville Rotary, and Boilermakers Union Local 482 for their generous donations. Additional funding for the purchase of the plaque was provided by the National and State SAR societies. The Village of Glen Carbon helped clear the site for the marker. INDIANA SOCIETY The Annual Colonel Augustin de la Balme Battle Site Commemoration hosted by the Col. Augustin de la Balme Chapter, DAR, was held Nov. 1, 2014, on the banks of the Eel River, near the Whitley-Allen County line. The Indiana Society Color Guard presented the colors. The colonel, along with most of his men, perished during the battle at the hands of the Miami Indians, allies of the British led by Chief Little Turtle. A sword from the battle was found during an excavation of the site. Anthony Halberstadt Chapter At the September meeting, Eagle Scout Benjamin Steyer was presented with the Eagle Scout Certificate of Recognition for service to the community. Ben's Eagle Scout project was building a picnic area for the Arrowhead Prairie Little River Wetland Project in southwest Allen County. The picnic area includes mulch and two picnic tables. It is open to the public to picnic, study, observe the natural prairie, and hike the trails. At sunrise on Veterans Day, the chapter presented the employees of Raytheon in Fort Wayne with a Flag Certificate and an American flag in recognition of their patriotic display of the flag, as well as their continuing support of the local Department of Veterans Affairs. Each Memorial Day, the Raytheon grounds are decorated with hundreds of "spearhead" American flags, each one representing a donation from a Raytheon employee. The event featured the singing of the national anthem by the Raytheon Singers, with the flag raised by the Color Guard of the 122nd Fighter Wing, Indiana Air National Guard. Also attending were members of the Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter, DAR. IOWA SOCIETY Vietnam-era veterans and Iowa SAR members David Lamb and Ron Rittel took part at the state of Iowa Veterans Day 2014 observance in Des Moines. They were joined by Iowa DAR member Judy McNamara and Col. Bob King of the Iowa National Guard. Central Iowa Chapter Iowa SAR Central Iowa Chapter newsletter editor R.W. Hickman joined with grandchildren Morgan, Quin and Sophia Cox, in the Crescent, Iowa, Fall Harvest Parade, right. Compatriot Hickman also helped arrange the marking and pre- sentation of full military honors by the 49th Iowa Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Honor Guard for a previ- ously unmarked grave of a Civil War veteran. The event drew more than 60 relatives and citizens from as far away as California and Arizona. General George Rogers Clark Chapter members posed with State President Thomas Ashby with the plaque.
