WINTER 2014-2015 27 Maj. Gen. James A. Adkins, adjutant general of Maryland. More photos of the event are on the chapter's Facebook page. Gen. William Smallwood Chapter At the chapter's December meeting, compatriots heard a talk entitled "Facing the Grave – The Archiving of Monocacy Cemetery" by Glen Wallace. Wallace spoke of the history of the cemetery in Beallsville, Md., noting significant events, including its start as a Tuscarora American Indian settlement along the Monocacy River, named for its healing waters. On this site, Monocacy Chapel was founded in 1741. The church and cemetery were occupied during the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Civil War; it was established as St. Peter's Chapel in 1782. Wallace and others, over a multiyear period, researched each burial and created an electronic database. The cemetery contains the remains of more than 5,000 persons. An effort by Wallace, Jack Carson of the Smallwood Chapter, and sisters Lisa Hilton and Brenda Roundy of Sugarloaf Monuments provided granite markers for previously unmarked gravesites of six of the Revolu tionary War soldiers. The SAR logo was permanently sandblasted into the markers. John Paul Jones Chapter The John Paul Jones Chapter presented a flag certificate, below, on Nov. 11, 2014, to the Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater, Md. The funeral home has a flagpole with a brass marker indicating its dedication to all veterans, living and dead. The funeral home conducts a big event on Memorial Day with flags displayed all over the lawn to honor veterans. John Hanson Chapter On Nov. 16, 2014, the John Hanson Chapter held a Law Enforcement Awards Ceremony. Awards were presented by Chapter President Doug Stuart and Regent Reisha Raney of the Harmony Hall Chapter of the DAR. Prince George's County police officers Michael W. Stargel and Michael R. Risher were honored for their efforts in saving the life of a knifing victim by stabilizing the individual from losing blood until the EMS unit arrived. Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Prince George's Division presented Sgt. Roy Ricasa an award for his outstanding proactive criminal enforcement activities and meritorious lifesaving actions. He tallied more than 70 full- custody arrests, recovered some $50,000 worth of crack cocaine, and, while off duty, helped find a missing person with diabetes who was lost in the woods. Little Meadows Chapter The chapter awarded a Certificate of Appreciation to Cumberland, Md., resident Mary Gallion in recognition for her respect and patriotism to protect and honor the U.S. flag. After an early morning summer storm had knocked down her neighbor's flag, Gallion took an afghan from her house and placed it under the flag, below, stating she knew that no part of the U.S. flag should touch the ground. Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter During the chapter's fall meeting, Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter President George Lewis, below, second from the right, facilitated a forum to kick off the 249th/250th Anniversary of the Repudiation Act. Compatriot Ryan Bass set the stage for the 1765 drafting of the Act, Clerk of the Circuit Court Sandy Dalton read and discussed the revolutionary spark of the Act, and Compatriot George Delaplaine detailed the 200th anniversary celebration of the Act in 1965 in Frederick, Md., the city where it was drafted, published and enacted.
