26 SAR MAGAZINE LOUISIANA SOCIETY Gen. Philemon Thomas Chapter The Gen. Philemon Thomas Chapter hosted a grave- marking ceremony at St. Raphael Cemetery on Nov. 7, 2014, in Bayou Goula, La., for Patriot Pierre Belly, second lieutenant of the Iberville Militia of Louisiana under Spanish Gov. Bernardo de Galvez. Members of the LASSAR in front of the tomb, above, are former LASSAR President Tony Vets, Colfax; Eugene Le Blanc, Homer Baugh and Ted Brode, Monroe; George Washington Chapter President Norman Umholtz, New Orleans; descendant Willard "Bill" Gueringer; LASSAR President Bob Hess; Gen. Philemon Thomas Chapter President Clifford Normand; Greg Lindsly; and LASSAR Past President James Morock. MARYLAND SOCIETY Some 50 compatriots and guests attended the MDSSAR Semi-Annual Meeting on Oct. 25, 2014, at the Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis, Md. During the morning business meeting, guests were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the Maryland State House. The attendees enjoyed a catered meal and an interesting presentation by Alexander "Sasha" Lourie, curator of artistic property at the Maryland State Archives, who reviewed the history and current renovation efforts to restore the Old Senate Chamber in the State House. The Old Senate Chamber served as home to the United States Congress in 1784, and was where the Treaty of Paris, ending the American Revolution, was ratified. George Washington resigned his commission as the commander in chief of the Continental Army there. The chamber was completely revamped in the mid-19th century and was the site on April 20, 1889, of the founding of the MDSSAR. The current research and renovation strive to make the chamber look as Washington would have known it. The room was scheduled to be opened to public view in early 2015. PPP On Dec. 13, 2014, the MDSSAR held its 53rd Annual Patriots Ball at the Hilton Garden Inn in White Marsh, Md. Ninety compatriots and guests attended, including participants from 38 historical and lineage societies. President General Lindsey Brock, VPG J. Thomas Showler and the officers of the MDSSAR were in attendance and welcomed their guests, including debutante Caitlin Marie Trenkle. Capt. John Smoot Chapter The chapter met Oct. 18, 2014, at the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore. Compatriot Mark Tyler invited fife players Ken and Carolyn Farley and drummer Charles Smith, who opened the meeting with selections from the American Revolutionary era. The guest speaker, Maryland State Delegate Mike McDermott, talked about the American Revolution and the freedoms we enjoy. Christian Ardinger Chapter Members of the Christian Ardinger Chapter, MDSSAR, presented a check for $5,000 to the city of Hagerstown at its city council meeting Oct. 21, 2014. The donation will go toward the George Washington statue project. Attending were Mayor Davis S. Gysberts; Steve Bockmiller, planning department; Paul Banister, chapter president; John Turner, vice president; Jim Ballard, past president; and Mike Flohr, secretary. "This past Sunday marked the 233rd anniversary of surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, which effectively ended the Revolutionary War, so this presentation couldn't be better timed," Banister said. "While our local chapter is the conduit through which these funds are passed, this donation represents the generosity of the more than 800 members of our state society and its 15 chapters. I wanted to give special recognition to the past President General of our national society, Joe Dooley, whose generous gift is included in this check." The statue will depict George Washington as he looked as a young colonel in the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War. Washington had sojourned in the county during that period and often visited here later in life. The statue is expected to be dedicated in the spring of 2016. Col. Aquila Hall Chapter The Col. Aquila Hall Chapter, MDSSAR, set up an information tent for two days at the Colonial Craftsman Event at Jerusalem Mill. A poster board showing some of the different uniforms worn by the American soldiers drew attention of the older visitors, while a drummer boy photo prop was a hit with the kids. Betsy Ross flags were given to the children, who were quizzed about who made it and how many stars it had. Several attendees showed interest in becoming members. Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore Chapter The Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore Chapter met at Ryleigh's Restaurant in Hunt Valley, Md., for Veterans Day. The guest speaker was Maj. Gen. Jim Adkins, adjutant general of Maryland, who spoke on the Maryland 400, who saved Washington's troops and are celebrated annually in August in New York. He noted the MDSSAR support to keep their memory alive by its recent generous donation of $10,000 to fund the MD 400 research being conducted by the Maryland State Archives. In addition, Eagle Scout William Sarudy was presented his new SAR membership certificate, with his family there to see him welcomed into the SAR.
