WINTER 2014-2015 29 and the national anthem. Also participating were the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and an American Civil War re-enactors group. PPP Through the generosity of Northern Michigan Chapter Compatriot Gerald Wall, Immanuel Baptist Church in Roscommon, Mich., is the proud recipient of a George Washington portrait and a framed American flag. Both items were purchased through the NSSAR. If you or your chapter are interested in making similar donations to schools or churches in your area, please consult the NSSAR website at www.sar.org . MINNESOTA SOCIETY Retired District Judge David Sinclair Bouschor, left, was the speaker at the MNSAR Constitution Day Luncheon held at Jax Cafe on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014. His talk on "The Anatomy of Justice" was a thoroughly enjoyable presentation of anecdotes from trials over which he presided during his distinguished career on the bench. He noted that Duluth, Minn.— with the exception of one major murder trial—had few serious crimes during the 1970s. Bouschor also noted that the U.S. court system is better than that of many other nations. He feels that Minnesota has good district judges, who are elected every six years. Compatriot Bouschor is a past president of the MNSSAR and the former Duluth Chapter. Following his presentation, he was honored with the Certificate of Appreciation from the MNSSAR. NEBRASKA SOCIETY Omaha Chapter New Compatriot David Conley was inducted into the SAR at the November meeting of the Omaha Chapter by his brother, Tom Conley, the chapter president. This was a surprise for President Conley, who wasn't aware his brother had applied for membership. Their mother also attended the ceremony. PPP During the December chapter meeting, the society recognized 10 NESSAR compatriots who have received the honorary title of Admiral in the Nebraska Navy for their patriotic, military or other acts at various times in the past while Nebraska citizens. In 1931, then-Nebraska Lt. Gov. Theodore W. Metcalf, while serving as acting governor, appointed 20 to 25 prominent Nebraskans as admirals to please some of his friends, hence, the Great Navy. The primary purpose of the association is to promote and enhance "Good Life of the State of Nebraska." Eight of the 10 NESSAR members are pictured: standing, from left, William Webb, Ronald Stites, Robert Knott, Raymond Harris, John Parsons and Fred Walden. Seated, from left, David Kentsmith, a non-admiral; NESSAR President John Reinert holding a citation; and Admiral Gary Gray. All except Kentsmith are admirals from the Omaha Chapter. Not pictured are Dr. James Hoke and Merle Rudebusch from the Lincoln Chapter. The award certificate describes the honor as follows: "And I [the Governor of Nebraska] do strictly charge and require all officers, seamen, tadpoles and goldfish under your command to be obedient to your orders as Admiral—and you are to observe and follow, from time to time, such directions you shall receive, according to the rules and discipline of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska." NEVADA SOCIETY On Veterans Day, the Fifes & Drums of Nevada made its premier parade performance. The Fifes & Drums of Nevada was founded by Northern Nevada Chapter President David Hess in 2013. Its membership is open to children and adults who want to participate in recreating the ffe and drum music of the 18th and 19th centuries. Its current members include Compatriots Hess, Brian Worcester, retired U.S. Air Force Col. Edward Carson, Roger Linscott and Marcia Baldwin of the Washoe Zephyr Chapter, NSDAR. The Fifes & Drums banner was escorted in the parade by Compatriot retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Niklas Putnam and Compatriot Paul Hicks, the most recent inductee of the Northern Nevada Chapter. The banner was carried by Chapter Registrar John Ryland, accompanied by Sharal Linscott of the Sagebrush Chapter, NSDAR, and her granddaughter, 5-year-old Lizzy Hammond. From left, Niklas Putnam, Brian Worcester, Edward Carson, Marcia Baldwin, David Hess, Lizzy Hammond, Roger and Sharal Linscott, John Ryland and Paul Hicks.
