M embers of the South Carolina Society invite compatriots and guests to join them in Greenville, S.C., as they host the 124th Annual Congress. Mark your calendars for July 18-23. Situated in the Upcountry and sitting at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville is one of the most vibrant cities in the Southeast. With a booming technology sector and as home to BMW North America and Michelin—along with their array of supporting businesses—the area is hopping. This city has a lot of Southern charm to offer SAR visitors, and you may want to extend your stay. The Upcountry is a setting rich in Revolu- tionary War history, with nearby sites such as King's Mountain and Cowpens. The Revolu- tionary War's Southern Theater contains more battle sites in South Carolina than any other location. An Incredible Main Street The highly acclaimed Main Street will fulfill your restaurant and shopping desires. With accolades from Forbes magazine to Southern Living, it's the location of more than 90 dining establishments along with quaint shopping, all within a few minutes' walk. The elegant, sophisticated Hyatt Regency Greenville anchors the north end of Main Street. Strolling down the street, visitors will find outdoor dining, restaurants of varied cuisines, and shopping for gifts to take home. Along the way, stop to visit the Nathanael Greene statue. At the south end is West End and the nearby River Falls Park with an impressive, 355-foot-long pedestrian bridge. Friday Night – Upcountry Museum So, what is the "Upcountry?" The historical reception and tour on Friday evening will provide the answer as to why people fled the coastal areas in the summer for the Upcountry. This event will include food, fun and a social gathering. A tour of the Upcountry History Museum, a 2010 Rand McNally "Best of the Road" honoree, will provide an understanding of the role and impact of South Carolina's northwest 15 counties from the 18th century to the present. From static displays to interactive exhibits, this award-winning museum design will delight compatriots and guests.
