36 SAR MAGAZINE Obhof was selected because of his work on Senate Bill 165 during the 129th General Assembly. Senate Bill 165, known as the "Founding Documents Bill," requires the state's history curriculum standards to include the study of Ohio's and the nation's founding documents. Specifically, the bill adds the texts of the Declaration of Independence, the Northwest Ordinance, the U.S. Constitution, and the Ohio Constitution to Ohio's history curiculum. Cincinnati Chapter Cincinnati Chapter President Don McGraw presented the Wounded Warrior Award to retired Petty Officer 3rd Class William A. Hargis on Nov. 16, 2013. During World War II, Hargis served aboard the USS Callaghan when it was hit by a kamikaze attack near Okinawa, Japan. Hargis spent nearly seven hours in the water, clinging to a crate until he and his fellow crewmen were rescued. Henry Knox Chapter Members of the General Henry Knox Chapter (above) placed a stone marker at the grave of Thomas Davis in the Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Ohio, on Oct. 12, 2013. Davis served three years in the Maryland Militia. Five chapters of the SAR and DAR attended. Lynn McCann, Gen. Henry Knox Chapter president, thanked the Lucy Knox Chapter of the DAR, and the Camp Charlotte, Hocking Valley and Cincinnati chapters of the SAR for attending. Hocking Valley Chapter The Hocking Valley Chapter pre- sented the colors for the Ohio State women versus Army basketball game on Dec. 13, 2013. The members of the color guard were Robert Davis, Carl Roshong, Paul Irwin and Thomas Hankins, who is the acting chapter color guard com- mander. Lafayette Chapter The Lafayette Chapter, OHSSAR, and the Akron Chapter, OHSDAR, cel- ebrated their 90th anniversary during the Veterans Day weekend (below). A well-attended joint luncheon was held in Akron. Dave Allison of the Lafayette Chapter delivered comments and the Archibald Willard Color Guard posted the colors. Western Reserve Society The Joint Veterans Commission of Cuyahoga County presented four awards in a Veterans Day ceremony for service to veterans and the community. Among those honored in the Cleveland City Hall rotunda were John H. and Elizabeth Franklin, citizen honorees. The Franklins, who met at Cleveland Heights High School and just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary, have been active in many veterans orga- nizations and have participated in numerous ceremo- nies honoring veter- ans over the years. John is active in the SAR and is past pres- ident and color guard commander at the chapter and state levels. Elizabeth is past president of the National Ladies Auxiliary of the NSSAR.
