EMPIRE STATE (NEW YORK) SOCIETY On Oct. 16, 2013, Mary Alice Visnefsky of the Anna Smith Strong Chapter, NSDAR, right, and Kathleen Vermaelen of the Ladies Auxiliary, Long Island Chapter, SAR, presented a check for $1,400 to The Veterans Place, a shelter for homeless veterans operat- ed by the Suffolk County United Veterans in Yaphank. Donations were raised during the Sept. 14 Liberty Luncheon, a Long Island DAR-SAR networking event co-hosted by the two chapters. This is the second con- secutive year the Long Island Chapter ESSAR has worked alongside the DAR to raise funds for needy local veterans. Valcour Battle Chapter The chapter commemorated the 237th anniversary of its namesake event on Oct. 11, 2013, with a luncheon at Clinton Community College. Regent Pam Meyers of the Saranac Chapter, NSDAR, was the hostess. The keynote speaker was historian Peter Guibord, who presented "Benedict Arnold in the Days Leading Up to the Valcour Battle." Afterward, wreaths were placed at the monument by Blue Star, POW/MIA and other veterans' organizations. FLORIDA SOCIETY Clearwater Chapter Eagle Scout Trevor J. Case and his younger brother, Life Scout Stuart J. Case, were recognized by Compatriot Art Hays of the Clearwater Chapter for completing the SAR requirements for the Boy Scout Path to the SAR Eagle Scholarship program. The requirements include the com- pletion of the BSA American Heritage, Genealogy and Law merit badges as a means to encourage scouts to become more knowledgeable about American heritage, their family heritage and the process by which citizens have come to be governed by the rule of law. Scouts who earn these merit badges are given special consideration by the SAR when they subsequently attain the rank of Eagle and qualify to apply for the SAR Eagle Scout Scholarship. The presentation was made at the Court of Honor Awards Ceremony for Troop 26 on Dec. 17, 2013, at the Palm Harbor United Methodist Church. Trevor and Stuart each were present- ed with a Certificate of Recognition for their achievement and an SAR-BSA Partnership for Good Citizenship patch. Trevor, 16, is in the 11th grade and attends Palm Harbor University High School and Stuart, 12, is in the seventh grade and attends Guardian Angels Catholic School in Clearwater. They are the sons of Richard and Pamela Case of Palm Harbor. Jacksonville Chapter Rev. Johnson Pace Jr., a 71-year compatriot and former president and chaplain of the Jacksonville Chapter, celebrated his 95th birth- day on Aug. 15, 2013, with the help of David Ramseur, former FLSSAR president; Secretary General Lindsey Brock, who present- ed a medal and cer- tificate to Rev. Pace for his support of the Center for Advancing America's Heritage; and Chapter President Jim Gaskins. Work continues in establishing a monument at the Thomas Creek Revolutionary Battle Site. Ramseur led the chapter's efforts in working with the City of Jacksonville and other organi- zations to purchase the 846-acre tract. The goal is to have the monument and visitor amenities in place this year.
