WINTER 2013-14 35 Halifax Resolves Chapter The Halifax Resolves Chapter dedi- cated an SAR Patriot Marker at the grave of Col. John Whitaker in the WhitakerÕs Chapel Cemetery east of Enfield, N.C. The marker recognizes WhitakerÕs service during the Revolutionary War. Whitaker was born May 2, 1747. In February 1776 Whitaker, along with Capt. Pope, were dis- patched from Halifax with their compa- ny of militia to assist patriot forces at the Battle of MooreÕs Creek Bridge. When they arrived, the battle was over, so they then assisted other patri- ot forces in capturing the retreating Tory forces. Whitaker was promoted to major and lietenant colonel and served as a collector of customs. On Feb. 2, 1779, the North Carolina General Assembly commissioned him as colonel in com- mand of the 200 Light Horse Cavalry of Halifax County. He remained in command until resigning his commis- sion in February 1780. Whitaker also served as a member of the North Carolina General Assembly in 1778, 1779 and 1785, representing Halifax County. He died July 20, 1816. Marquis de Lafayette Chapter A ÒmarqueeÓ 10-man SAR color guard, all in step and proper align- ment, marched in FayettevilleÕs Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 9, 2013. As the second unit in the parade, members of the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter marched with those of other chapters to form a NCSSAR Color Guard, which included a drummer who sharply beat the cadence. It was the largest parade in North Carolina and included more than 100 entries, including color guards, marching bands, military units, truck-mounted displays and motorcycles. The mem- bers of the NCSSAR Color Guard included Niels Hansen, Steve Pittard, John Elliott, Clark Wiser, Gene Funderburk (Lower Cape Fear Chapter), Guy Higgins (General George Washington Chapter), Lee Harford, Frank Horton, Jason Wetzel and Chris Ruff (in the second rank, playing the drum). The parade was simulcast internationally on the WRAL Channel 5 television network and pho- tographs of our color guard were post- ed on the Fayetteville ObserverÕs website. OHIO SOCIETY State Sen. Larry Obhof (RÐMedina) was honored on Oct. 29, 2013, by the OHSSAR with the Silver Good Citizenship Medal. The medal is given to individuals who have displayed unusual patriotic achievement and service. It is present- ed to people of prominence in govern- ment, religion, education, business and other professions. ÒI am honored to receive this recog- nition,Ó said Obhof. ÒI have worked hard to improve our education system by bringing more rigor to OhioÕs histo- ry curriculum and by focusing on the events and ideas that form the founda- tion of our democracy.Ó Whitaker ceremony participants.
