32 SAR MAGAZINE said that the medal is considered sec- ond in importance only to the SAR Gold Good Citizen Medal. Awarding of this medal is considered only after the SAR Medal of Appreciation has been presented. Hare was awarded that medal several years ago. The Daughters of Liberty Medal is awarded in appreciation for unselfish devotion, tireless efforts and assis- tance to the SAR, and to someone who has dedicated her time, energy and ability to the organization. Rowley noted, in particular, that Hare is a world-class genealogist who has contributed tremendously to find- ing and assisting those who may have a genealogical link to patriots of the American Revolution. PPP The IASSAR met in the historic Amana Colonies in Amana, Iowa, on Sept. 21, 2013, for the fall meeting and formal installation Harold Goodrich as the 76th president—and second Goodrich—of the Iowa Society. Dr. J.A. Goodrich of Des Moines served as president during the 1941-42 term. KANSAS SOCIETY On Sept. 18, 2013, the Konza Prairie Chapter highlighted the 14th Annual Constitution Day Ceremony for fifth- graders at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kan. More than 250 students, plus teachers and parents, attended. After presenta- tions about the life and times of Revolutionary War soldiers, the pre- senters fielded numerous questions from the audience. The final part of the ceremony was the opportunity for each student to sign a replica of the U.S. Constitution. MARYLAND SOCIETY Albert V. Marx Jr. was inducted into the Gen. William Smallwood Chapter of the MDSSAR on Sept. 5, 2013. He is the first member to be inducted via NSSAR's national Operation REACH (Reaching Every American Compatriot at Home) pro- gram, a joint venture with Ancestry. com. Maryland was one of three test states to pilot the program prior to the national rollout. Chapter President Tim McCabe was the Maryland Operation REACH chairman and assisted Compatriot Marx. Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter The Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter in Frederick County was a key player in the June 15, 2013, activities to honor Francis Scott Key and his origi- nal manuscript of the poem that became "The Star-Spangled Banner," our national anthem. The manuscript was on loan from the Maryland State Historical Society for public display in Frederick during that weekend. The highlight of the event was the "reunit- ing" of the handwritten document with its author for the first time in 200 years. It has since been returned to the State Historical Society in Baltimore, where it is permanently stored. Key lived and practiced law in Frederick and is considered a favorite son. Many SAR and DAR period- dressed members lined the street for the mile-long procession that accom- panied the historical document. The parade from Frederick City Hall to the Key burial site in Mt. Olivet Cemetery included the Old Maryland Color Guard and the Maryland National Capital Park Police's Horse Mounted Unit from Montgomery County, Md. The Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter provided an enthusiastic color guard in Revolutionary attire, which raised a 15-star flag that previously had flown over Fort McHenry and the Key monument in Frederick. After the pro- gram was completed, the color guard retired the colors. This flag will be permanently stored within the Bjorlee Museum next to the historic Revolutionary War Hessian Barracks on the campus of the Maryland School for the Deaf. Presenting the colors were Howard Koontz, Fort McHenry Fife and Drum Corps; chapter members Bruce Champion, committee chairman; Gary Brohawn; Karl "Woody" Woodcock, assistant chaplain; James "Ed" Smith, registrar; Eugene Moyer, assistant sec- retary; and Larry Bishop, past presi- dent. Retiring the flag, below from left, were Eugene Moyer, Color Guard Commander Don Deering and Larry Bishop. MINNESOTA SOCIETY Col. Ronald McRoberts presented the keynote address entitled "The Last Full Measure: The First Minnesota at From left, MDSSAR Second Vice President Bill Batton, MDSSAR President J. Patrick Warner, new Compatriot Albert V. Marx Jr., and Gen. Smallwood Chapter President Tim McCabe. WINTER_14_sar26-40.indd 32 2/4/14 11:28 AM
