28 SAR MAGAZINE COLORADO SOCIETY Two elected officials were honored by the COSSAR on Nov. 8, 2013, at the All-Services Military Ball held at Colorado Mesa University. Jim Doody, a Grand Junction city councilman and former mayor, was presented the Silver Citizenship Medal and Certificate, the SAR's second-highest national award for outstanding citizenship, by State President Garry Brewer. Doody's dream of a memorial in Fruita to honor Vietnam veterans, together with his service to the City of Grand Junction and Mesa County, made him an outstanding can- didate for this award. Mesa County Assessor Barbara Brewer was honored by past State President Bill Buvinger with the Daughters of Liberty award for her unselfish devotion to the citizens and youth of Mesa County. In 2010 Brewer was presented the Martha Washington Award from the SAR and also is a recipient of the Boy Scouts of America's highest council award. Brewer, a daughter of a World War I veteran, is pas- sionate about veterans' issues. She also is a member of the Mt. Garfield Chapter, DAR. CONNECTICUT SOCIETY Oliver Wolcott Sr. Branch Members of the Gov. Oliver Wolcott Sr. Branch gave an informative presenta- tion to children at the Litchfield Historical Society on July 26, 2013. This capped off a weeklong history camp for 9- to 12-year-olds titled "Adventures in Early America!" The branch would have set up the Paul Everett Living History Encampment outdoors, but due to heavy rain that morning some of the items were brought inside. Compatriots explained their use and what a day in the life of a soldier would have been like during the American Revolution. This was told not only from the per- spective of American soldiers, but also from a British soldier's point of view. Branch member Mike Miller was attired in the outfit he wears when re-enacting with the 23rd Regiment of Foot Royal Welch Fusiliers in America and demon- strated a fierce and frightening bayonet charge. Other branch members wearing Colonial militia attire were Martin Spring, Chris Elliott and Ken Buckbee. Elliott's son and daughter are C.A.R. members and helped with the presen- tation, wearing Colonial American children's clothing. Elliott's son is a member of a fife and drum corps, and he explained how drums were used to communicate com- mands and could be heard above the din of battle. Spring explained the difference between a rifle and a smooth-bore musket. Toward the end of the presentation, the group moved outside, where Miller gave the children firelock drill instructions, and Elliott showed them how to play trap- ball. Roger Sherman Branch Roger Sherman Branch President Harding Dies presented a War Service Medal and Certificate to World War II veter- an Fred Daniello at Aurora Senior Living in Norwalk, where he resides. Daniello, 90, served from Feb. 2, 1943, until Nov. 13, 1945. After training, he was in the 38th Infantry Division named "The Avengers of Bataan," the Cyclone Division. His primary job was on the front lines, carrying the wounded on stretchers to a collection station. Dies said, "His legacy is like so many other patriots— serving the country and then benefiting from his sacrifice and providing the freedom and opportunity that he can pass on to his heirs. As members of the CTSSAR, we salute these men, and today women, who defend us and help us preserve our heritage." DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SOCIETY The DCSSAR held its annual Potowmack Debutante Ball Nov. 30, 2013, presenting young ladies of the Children of the American Revolution from throughout the nation. The ball was held in Washington, D.C., at the Almas Temple Grand Ballroom, near The White House. It was a great success, celebrating these young ladies who are lead- ers in their C.A.R. chapters, their communities, their schools and their churches. For the proud parents and fami- ly members, the evening was a lifetime memory they will treasure. From left, President Garry Brewer, Barbara Brewer, Jim Doody and past State President Bill Buvinger.
