40 SAR MAGAZINE VIRGINIA SOCIETY Col. James Wood II Chapter Monuments were dedicated to vet- eran soldiers on Aug. 24, 2013, in Winchester, Va., by members of the Sons of the American Revolution, Society of the War of 1812 and the United States Daughters of 1812. The site of the event was the Daniel Morgan Veterans' Cemetery at Mt. Hebron Cemetery. Two stone monu- ments were dedicated bearing the names of 40 Revolutionary War sol- diers and 42 War of 1812 soldiers. More than $5,000 to purchase the monu- ments was donated by three nonprofit civic organizations whose members participated in the dedication: the Knight-Patty Trust Fund of the VASSAR, the Society of the War of 1812 and the United States Daughters of 1812. The heads of the respective organizations who unveiled the mon- uments were retired Capt. Kent Webber, retired Col. Mike Lyman, and Jacque- Lynne Amann Schulman. The remains of these patriots are buried throughout Mt. Hebron. Some soldiers' remains are in unmarked graves, but most of the 82 were located by Jack Lillis of Winchester and Ray Goff of the James Wood II Chapter. "I liked seeing relatives attend our festivities," Compatriot Lillis stated. Scores of guests, SAR chapter officers and members were present to lay wreaths at the beauti- ful monuments. Lillis, the overall coordinator of the event, said, "Most of graves are in the old part of Mt. Hebron, the Lutheran or the Reformed German cemeteries." Assisting with the on-site program was Compatriot David Carpenter. Williamsburg Chapter The Williamsburg Chapter observed Veterans Day by conducting a wreath- laying ceremony at the Govenor's Palace in Colonial Williamsburg. More than 150 people attended, the largest crowd ever. The ceremony, which included a reading by "George Washington," honored 158 patriots (156 men and two women) buried in unmarked graves in the garden behind the palace. These Patriots died at the Palace and were buried there when it was used as a military hospital during the Battle of Yorktown. The Williamsburg Chapter SAR Color Guard and a member of The Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums pre- sented the colors. The Williamsburg Chapter was among the SAR chapters that partici- pated in the Yorktown Observance at Yorktown, Va., on Oct. 19, 2013. WASHINGTON SOCIETY Compatriots partici- pated in Medal of Honor Recipent John "Bud" Hawk's memorial service on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2013, at the Kitsap County Sun Pavilion at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton Wash. The colors were pre- sented and posted by WASSAR Color Guardsmen Lt. Col. Bob O'Neal, com- mander; Doug Nelson, captain of John Paul Jones Chapter Color Guard; and new color guard member Art Dolan of the Alexander Hamilton Chapter. The armed color guard member was rifle- man Col. Bob Smalser, JPJ chapter. Mick Hersey and Doug Nelson escorted Hawk's daughter, Marilyn, and another family member to the dais to accept the signage that will be used to name a street in Bremerton "John 'Bud' Hawk Memorial Drive." Hersey told the interesting story of how he met Bud Hawk and his family while awarding him an SAR Flag Certificate. He told of their desire to trace their ancestors to the Revolutionary War and the subsequent induction of Bud into the SAR at his home. The group also met Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Ty Carter, who attended the ceremony. About 1,400 people attended the memorial. WEST VIRGINIA SOCIETY A memorial ceremony and grave- marking for President General Charles "Charlie" Francis Printz (1988-89) and his wife, Bethel "Beth" Geraldine Hottel Printz, was held on Oct. 12, 2013, at the Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town, W.Va. In 1974 Printz became a member of the Gen. Adam Stephen Chapter, NSSAR, and served as its president from 1978 to his death. From 1979-80, he was president of the West Virginia Society, and then served as President General of the National Society from 1988-89. He later was awarded the NSSAR's highest award, The Minuteman Award. Charlie passed away on Sept. 30, 2011; Beth passed away on Oct. 20, 2011, just a few weeks later. President General Joseph W. Dooley paid his respects to Gen. Thomas Nelson Jr. during the annual memorial service prior to the Yorktown Celebration parade and program to commemorate the 232nd anniversary of the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1781.
