30 SAR MAGAZINE GEORGIA SOCIETY The GASSAR on Oct 7, 2013, joined Savannah's Coastal Heritage Society for the annual anniversary com- memoration of the Siege of Savannah in 1779. The siege— or Second Battle of Savannah—consisted of a Franco-American attempt to retake Savannah. Among the many killed in the battle were Patriot Gen. Casimir Pulaski and Patriot hero Sgt. William Jasper. The Georgia Color Guard led a contingent of SAR compatriots, members of other local lineage organi- zations, and interested citi- zens in an early morning parade that loosely followed the course of the French and American patriots who assaulted the British-held Spring Hill Redoubt. President General Joseph Dooley, a dual member of the GASSAR, was an honored guest and participant in the commemorative event. Later in the morning, Georgia Color Guard Commander Ed Rigel Sr. led a group that included PG Dooley, Georgia Color Guardsmen and spous- es, most of whom are members of the DAR, on a trolley tour around the famous squares of Savannah's historic district. The group paused at monu- ments honoring Revolutionary War heroes Pulaski, Jasper and Nathanael Greene. Atlanta Chapter On Oct. 10, 2013, the Atlanta Chapter, GASSAR, unveiled to its members its new "Georgia's Sacred Soils" exhibit to be displayed in the near future at the Atlanta History Center, Georgia Archives and other metro-area locations. The display includes soil samples—and one water sample—taken from 28 engagements in Georgia during the Revolutionary War at which patriots were killed, wounded or captured. The samples are keyed to a map of the colony and brief descriptions of the sites and numbers killed and wounded. Pamphlets provide a summary of the site information. Chapter Chaplain Harold Brooks blessed the display, and Rev. John McAliley, a retired Navy chaplain, consecrated the soils in a moving ceremony. Area chapters interested in co-host- ing the display at suitable venues are encouraged to contact us to schedule a display, preferably 30 days or longer in advance. Also available for grave dedi- cations from the Atlanta Chapter is a mixture of the 28 soils that may be ceremoniously sprinkled at a patriot's grave, likely including a battle at which they served our new nation. Registrar David Noble was the guiding hand behind the project. His wife, Alice, assisted in research; Color Guard member Jim Hankins helped with the soil retrieval and signage; Eagle Scout Chairman Richard Marsh contributed his woodworking skills; President Terry Manning edited the pamphlet text; and Mae Belle McAliley designed the pamphlet. It has truly been a chapter initiative! Marquis de Lafayette Chapter Compatriots Knox Herndon and Bloise Hill rode with Earl McCribbins and Jim Ryan in the Republic of Vietnam Veterans Parade in Fayetteville, Ga., on Sept 28, 2013. Herndon, below, drove his World War II British SAS Desert Jeep. Knox is a Grenada veteran and retired Airborne Army LTC chaplain, and his father was a retired U.S. Army glider chaplain in the 88th GIR. Ryan is a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. McCribbins and Hill are Vietnam vet- erans. Herndon and Hill are members of the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter, GASSAR, and also are members of VFW Post 9949 in Peachtree City, Ga. Robert Forsyth Chapter The Robert Forsyth Chapter, the GASSAR's 32nd chapter, held its char- ter banquet in Cumming in early October 2013. A large number of guests and dignitaries attended the function, including Secretary General Lindsey Brock and other national and state officers. Representing Cumming and Forsyth County were the city's mayor, H. Ford Gravitt and Forsyth County Commission Chairman R.J. "Pete" Amos. Soils were collected from every known battle site in Georgia where at least one patriot was wounded or killed. The soil samples are keyed to a map showing the site of each engage- ment with a brief description of the battle. An accompanying pamphlet will highlight the information.
