WINTER 2013-14 31 Compatriot Allen Greenly was installed as the chapter's first presi- dent, and GASSAR President Jim Stallings inducted 23 new members. Greenly was presented the Meritorious Service Medal for his work in organiz- ing the state's newest chapter. The chapter was chartered with 55 mem- bers. Joyce Mortison of the Chestatee River Chapter, DAR, and Melissa Danielsson of the Martha Stewart Bullock Chapter, DAR, received the SAR Medal of Appreciation for their work in recruiting 22 new members. ILLINOIS SOCIETY Gen. Joseph Bartholomew Chapter The September joint meeting of the Gen. Joseph Bartholomew Chapter and the Letitia Green Stevenson Chapter of the DAR was featured on the front page of the Bloomington-Normal Pantagraph. It drew attention to the chapter's efforts to honor local heroes, including three local firefighters who rescued an 86-year-old woman from her burning home. The firefighters—Steven Zimmerman, Steven Petrovics and Lance Benedict—were not only hon- ored by the chapter with medals, but they also were able to reconnect with Helen Chambers and her daughters, who each gave the heroes big hugs, which were captured on the newspa- per's front page. Long Knives Chapter During the Nov. 8, 2013, chapter meeting, J.T. Bandy of Bandy's Pumpkin Patch near Johnston City, Ill., was presented a certificate of appreci- ation in recognition of his patriotic corn maze, above. When viewed from the air, the maze depicted a Continental soldier with his musket and the words "Protect your Rights." Continuing the patriotic theme, the maze contained six stations, each with a question related to the U.S. Constitution. Before entering the maze people were given a blank answer sheet. Upon completion of the maze and the sheet, they received a copy of the Bill of Rights and a button reading "I Did It 2013" over a picture of the aerial view of the maze. INDIANA SOCIETY The INSSAR Color Guard partici- pated in the Indianapolis Veterans Day parade on Nov. 11, 2013. Participating were Taylor Hicks, Earl Salisbury, Mark and Janet Kreps, Stuart Hart, Dennis Boone and Rod Sherard. PPP The Southern Indiana Command area participates in numerous fall fes- tivals and town parades. The color guard is a much-appreciated and sought-after marching unit for these parades in Southern Indiana towns. In the Central Indiana Command area, the INSSAR Color Guard partici- pated in an annual Caboose Festival given by a country/western entertainer for his fans. During the festival, a color guard performed a program to salute and honor all veterans attending. A musket salute and "Taps" ended the program. PPP Compatriots from three chapters of the INSSAR presented, posted and retrieved the colors for the Center Grove Middle School North Veterans Day observance. This large school's gym was filled with 925 students, plus parents, friends, and 165 veterans and families. The veterans had special seat- ing on the gym floor and were intro- duced as seated. Prior to the program, a free break- fast was served to all. Past INSSAR President Dave Betzner worked to obtain the color guard's first partici- pation in this event. Other groups had presented the colors in the past. The program planners invited the color guard back for future Veterans Day observances. IOWA SOCIETY The Iowa Society of the Sons of the American Revolution awarded the Daughters of Liberty medal to Brenda Hare of Cedar Rapids on Oct. 25, 2013, at Christ Episcopal Church. In presenting the award, IOSSAR Past President Mike Rowley In the foreground, James A. Shoptaw, a member of the Northern Command of the INSSAR Color Guard, and INSSAR President Bill Sharp saluted at the SAR gravesite vigil for George and Martha Washington on Sept. 14, 2013, at Mount Vernon. The INSSAR participated in naturalization proceedings during the annual International Festival at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Compatriots of the INSSAR congratulated all new citizens at the end of the program, shaking hands and giving a flag to each new citizen. A color guard compatriot also gave one of seven welcoming speeches during the proceedings. There were 200 new citizens natural- ized at the Nov. 22, 2013, service.
