Books for Consideration Robert L. Tonsetic, a retired U.S. Army colonel and author of a renowned trilogy of works on Vietnam combat, has turned his sights on the American Revolution in 1781: The Decisive Year of the Revolutionary War. Although the war did not officially end until 1783, the final outcome was decided in 1781. Going into 1781, the patriots were diminished and demoralized, and mutinies were breaking out due to a lack of pay and supplies. The British appeared ascendant, and with a major thrust into the southern Colonies, they were poised to deal a knockout blow. But somehow under the leadership of Washington's most trusted lieutenant, Nathanael Greene, the patriots rallied, and after a ferocious series of battles, the main British army was forced to surrender at Yorktown. American independence had effectively been won. This deeply researched history features a colorful array of characters: on the British side, Lord Cornwallis; the cavalry menace Banastre Tarlton; and the traitor Benedict Arnold, who in this campaign ravaged Virginia. For the Americans, we encounter "The Swamp Fox" Francis Marion, "Light Horse Harry" Lee, and their French allies Lafayette and Rochambeau. The battle descriptions have a detailed you-are-there nature reflecting the author's personal experience in the thick of combat. (ISBN: 978-1-612000-063-3, $32.95) *** In Barbarians & Brothers: Anglo-American Warfare, 1500-1865, author Wayne E. Lee takes readers on a guided tour of early modern English and American warfare, focusing on conflicts such as the 16th-century wars in Ireland, the English Civil War, the Colonial Anglo-American Indian wars, the American Revolution and the American Civil War. Through the narratives of these campaigns, Lee explains the lives and fears of ordinary soldiers along with the strategies of their commanders. As Lee discovers, the repeated experience of war with barbarians and brothers came to Paul Rodger Carson, 185586, Noah Greeley Trevor Joseph DeLorme, 185712, Makepeace Gates Christopher Fabian DeLorme, 185711, Makepeace Gates Mark Russell Downen, 185588, Josiah Downen Marion Thomas Hersey, 185587, James Hersey Robert Dale Parrish II, 185826, David Sutherland Thomas Carmi Peloquin, 185343, William Clark Grayson Ward Pettit, 185558, Michael Kintzer Andrew Kent Pettit, 185557, Michael Kintzer Dean Matthew White, 185756, James Russell West Virginia (27) Matthew Joshua Barber, 185930, John Ashcraft Alexander James Barber, 185929, John Ashcraft 46 determine British and American military actions and reactions. In other words, the enemy's outsider or insider status influences the amount of violence—or restraint—that the losing side experienced. Thus, what eventually emerged was an American culture of war that boiled down to one of two absolute solutions—either incorporate, include or let enemies go; or reject, exclude or kill them. Lee is an associate professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also is the author of Crowds and Soldiers in Revolutionary War North Carolina: The Culture of Violence in Riot and War. (ISBN: 978-0-19-973791-8, $34.95) *** Allen B. Simply put, their stories serve to reflect the honor and dedication with which America's troops performed their service. (ISBN: 978-1-61200-0953, $29.95) *** Marvin W. Bubie of the Empire State Society has compiled and published Celebrating the Revolutionary War: Municipal Symbols of a Free Country.
