KENTUCKY SOCIETY Several months ago, Don Root, a member of the Captain Charles Gatliff Chapter, KYSSAR, and a direct descendant of one of Gen. George Washington's Life Guards, had an idea. He discussed with the JROTC leaders and school officials at Knox Central High School in Barbourville, Ky., his idea of returning to the basics of American history by dedicating a hall in the school to the first American army. The hall would display historical documents and several Revolutionary War-era pictures. This hall would be named "Revolution Hall," providing a pictorial remembrance of America's birth and struggles. It would show what was required to obtain America's national sovereignty to make us who we are— Americans. The hall would be a reminder to not lose sight of the sacrifices of those who have gone before us. As Woodrow Wilson said, "A nation which does not remember what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today, nor what it is trying to do." The Knox Central High School JROTC Color Guard presented colors at the dedication service of Revolution Hall. The hall contains about 40 pictures and historical documents relating to the Revolutionary War and our country's founding, including George Washington's Commander's flag, a copy of the U.S. Constitution Officers and members of the Col. John Eager Howard Chapter MDSSAR and Commodore Joshua Barney-John Eager Howard DAR joined together, right, to erect a plaque on the grave of Col. John Eager Howard in honor of his remarkable services during the American Revolution.
