CONNECTICUT SOCIETY In October, The Connecticut Society presented the SAR Flag Certificate to the Connecticut Department of Transportation in Berlin. Randle, Christopher Thompson, George W. Mann and his 12-year-old grandson, Zachary Spiess. The chapter and society need new members to ensure new ideas, participation and interest. New members are dedicated to that end, and our youngest will safeguard our longevity and future growth. Wess gave a dynamic and informative presentation on the origin of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and The Society of the Cincinnati. Wess displayed a handwritten duty roster kept by his Revolutionary War ancestor, Capt. James McClean, from the time he was stationed at West Point about 250 years ago. This handwritten record has been handed down through his family for the past 250 years. It is well preserved and legible. It truly is a treasure to behold an authentic piece of history. Tampa Chapter The Tampa Chapter recognized one of the area's finest in the line of duty at its Oct. 20 monthly meeting. Cpl. William Orndoff of the Pasco County Sheriff's Department was honored with a Certificate of Recognition for his outstanding service to the community in the area of drug enforcement. Orndoff gave a short speech on the areas of his expertise and his department's ability to fight drug crimes. He said many drug offenders are using products to create new varieties of drugs that can lead to new highs, though many times those combinations affect the user's outlook and can even lead to death. GEORGIA SOCIETY Blue Ridge Mountains Chapter FLORIDA SOCIETY Clearwater Chapter The Clearwater Chapter presented its 2012 awards for outstanding public service in the community to the Largo Police and Fire departments at its October meeting. More than 100 people attended a grave-marking ceremony for Peter G. Ledford Sr. in mid-October at the old Ledford Chapel Cemetery just north of Hiawassee, Ga. The Blue Ridge Mountains Chapter and the Old Unicoi Trail Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution conducted the ceremony. The award-winning GASSAR Color Guard participated in the event. Ledford served more than six months in the Revolutionary War and survived the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina. Many Ledford descendants attended to pay their respects at the gravesite, below, where Ledford had chiseled his own headstone. Lakeland Chapter The September meeting of the Lakeland Chapter was sensational, instructive and informative, and laid the groundwork for chapter growth and permanence. Four new members were inducted and attendees heard an outstanding presentation by keynote 28 SAR MAGAZINE
