Gov. Paul Hamilton Chapter The inaugural Gov. Paul Hamilton Chapter History Award was presented to Karyn Devore on June 21, 2012. The award recognizes the University of South Carolina BeaufortÕs top history major graduating in 2012. Devore received a bachelor of arts degree in history, graduating magna cum laude from USCB with a concentration in the progression of railroad transportation in Europe and the United States. The chapter received three new members: Donald Leroy Starkey, David Paul Heape and Davidson Mobley Johnson. On May 25, Johnson was presented an Award of Excellence by his Citadel Class of 1961 for his unselfish efforts to assure the burial of the remains of two Citadel classmates. The award, The Davidson Mobley Johnson Award for Humanitarian Service, was named for him and is the first to be presented. Chapter President Jody Henson presented the following members with SAR Length of Service Pins and Certificates: Bill Paddock, 45 years; Col. Cud Baird, 30 years; Capt. Dean Cullison, 20 years; Tom Barrett, 15 years; and Tom Case, 10 years. TEXAS SOCIETY Athens Chapter The Athens Chapter observed Constitution Week at its September dinner meeting. The speaker was Lloyd deWitt Bockstruck, retired supervisor of the genealogy department of the Dallas Public Library. His topic was South CarolinaÕs role in the Revolutionary War. This marked the 16th consecutive year that Bockstruck has presented the chapterÕs Constitution Week program. In addition to being a renowned genealogist, Bockstruck is a nationally recognized author, hisArt Hall, chapter registrar and past chapter president, presented a certificate of appreciation torian and speaker, having conducted to Lloyd Bockstruck. numerous seminars during his 39-year career. He is a member of dozens of lineage societies, including the SAR, where he served as National Librarian General 1981-1983. His SAR membership includes the Dallas Chapter as well as an honorary membership in the Athens Chapter. A highlight of the meeting was the induction of Gene Pilgrim into the 40-member Athens Chapter, which was chartered in 1994. Plano Chapter Compatriot Dan Reed, president of the Plano Chapter, was guest speaker at the Oct. 13, 2012, meeting of the John F. Greer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in WINTER 2012-13 Anna, Texas. Pictured below are Reed and Regent Kelly Campbell with a musket produced by Asa Waters in Sutton, Mass., and used by Dr. Harold KinneÕs ancestor in the American Revolution, while he served in the Rhode Island Militia. Kinne also has his ancestorÕs mess kit, a wooden plate that was carried throughout the war. UTAH SOCIETY On May 19, 2012, the Utah Society was honored to host a banquet with President General Larry J. Magerkurth and First Lady Barbara. Compatriots and their guests from around the state came to the Wasatch Banquet Room at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City. The PG welcomed dignitaries and guests, including State Reps. Brad Galvez and Curt Oda. Many Utah Daughters of the American Revolution members attended. The PG installed UTSSARÕs new officers and welcomed and swore in the societyÕs newest members. Recognition was given to compatriots with many years of service, including Ezekial R. Dumke Jr., with 50 years of membership. UTSSAR recognized Cadet Matthew Sloan as the stateÕs JROTC winner and acknowledged Boy Scout Abram Matthew Weeks as the first-place NSSAR Eagle Scout winner. In his remarks, PG Magerkurth reminded the audience of the great blessing of liberty and freedom given to us by the American Revolution. He talked about his meeting with Elder L. Tom Perry of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. During their meeting, Elder Perry asked the PG to share his views on freedom of religion. ÒI assured Elder Perry that the SAR looked upon freedom of religion and the American Revolution as one and the same, inseparable in meaning and purpose,Ó he said. ÒHow can there be liberty without freedom of religion?Ó The audience also heard remarks from Colorado Society President William E. Buvinger and newly elected UTSSAR President Layton Patterson. Boy Scout Weeks attended the 122nd Phoenix, Ariz., Congress with his father, where he won the first-place Eagle Scout Award at the Youth Awards Luncheon. Compatriot Paul Childs, UTSSARÕs Eagle Scout chairman, UTSSAR Historian Ralph Erickson and UTSSAR National Trustee Joe Harris were on hand to acknowledge WeeksÕ accomplishments. The Utah Society was honored to receive at Congress the Marian L. Brown Eagle Scout Award for having the firstplace Eagle Scout Winner. UTSSAR also received the Genealogist GeneralÕs Award to the state society with the lowest percentage of pended applications for 2011-12. VIRGINIA SOCIETY George Washington Chapter At its September 2012, meeting, the George Washington Chapter of the Virginia Society welcomed Eric Grundset, the director of the DAR Library in Washington, D.C., as its guest speaker. Grundset described some of the changes at the library as well as the efforts to make more genealogical information available online. At the conclusion, the chapter presented Grundset with a framed Silver Good Citizenship Medal for his long history of service to the DAR and the genealogical community. Later that same day, the chapter sponsored a wreathlaying at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The delegation that presented the wreath was led by President General Stephen A. Leishman, National Color Guard Commander J. Michael Tomme, VASSAR 2nd Vice President W.A. ÒBillÓ Broadus Jr. and George Washington Chapter President F. Paul Briggs. 39
