INDIANA SOCIETY Compatriots of the INSSAR Color Guard—Jim Arnold of the Daniel Guthrie Chapter; and Ron Darrah, Earl Salisbury and Stuart Hart (not pictured) of the Clarence A. Cook Chapter—presented flags to 194 new American citizens. The naturalization service was held on Nov. 16, 2012, at the annual International Festival at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Compatriot Hart gave one of six welcoming speeches and took the photos. The guardsmen took turns welcoming, posing for pictures and shaking hands with the new citizens while presenting them with a flag. *** At the Indianapolis Veterans Day Parade, Compatriot Earl Salisbury instructed parade onlookers in how the musket works. Robert Shirtliff (a.k.a. DAR member Allison Key) is holding the musket in the photo below. Also marching in the parade were Compatriots Dennis Babbitt, Mark Kreps, Stuart Hart, WOSAR Janet Kreps and Ron Darrah (not pictured). The Indianapolis Veterans Day Parade is a large parade, with a long waiting time to step, and numerous stops and starts. The INSSAR guardsmen marching unit was in "Team" 1, unit 5. Up front is good! *** Indiana was well represented by members of the INSSAR, INSSAR Ladies Auxiliary, INSDAR and INSCAR at the Sept. 15 SAR ceremony marking the 225th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia. Pictured on the mall in front of Independence Hall, above, from left, are Donna and William Sharp III, Marge and Robert Howell Sr., Janet and President General Stephen Leishman, April and T. Rex Legler II, David and Donna Betzner, and Richard Smurdon and sons Brendon and Trevor. IOWA SOCIETY Compatriot Richard W. Hickman, above, of the Iowa Society recently conducted a brief memorial ceremony at the memorial site of Patriot Joel Buffington, the great-great-greatgrandfather of IASSAR Secretary/ Treasurer Volney Smith. One of Iowa's newest members, Hickman has already taken on several projects as an Iowa Color Guard member and has agreed to fill the role of the Iowa Society newsletter editor. WINTER 2012-13 31
