FALL 2014 37 TEXAS SOCIETY Audie Murphy was one of the most decorated American soldiers of World War II, and on June 21 his hometown of Farmersville, Texas, hosted a parade as part of a weeklong celebration of the hero turned actor. The North Texas Color Guard, made up of compatriots from six chapters, above, marched for the first time. The chapters participating included Ambassador Fletcher Warren, Dallas, Denton, East Fork Trinity, McKinney and Plano. Plano Chapter Color Guard members from the Plano Chapter led off the Plano, Texas 4th of July parade. Participants included Compatriots Drake Peddie, Blair Rudy, Dennis DeAtley, Chuck Sprague and Alan Johnson. VIRGINIA SOCIETY The Virginia Culpeper Minutemen led the citywide Culpeper July 4th celebration. Culpeper President Bill Schwetke was master of ceremonies for the day-long event. Former VASSAR President Jim Bayne was the featured speaker on the courthouse lawn, where a large audience gathered in the beautiful weather. At the end of Bayne's speech, the many children who attended were invited to sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence. The chapter color guard, in superb fashion, paid respects with the colors. Paul Chase, in regimental uniform from the Col. William Grayson Chapter with Minutemen members, took the lead in fund collection with Liberty Sprigs and educating attendees on how the Liberty Sprig helped America to victory. This was the third time in 2014 in which the Culpeper Minutemen and Col. William Grayson chapters held joint fundraisers through the Liberty Sprig program. Courthouse ceremonies were followed by a large specialty car show and huge parade through town with the Culpeper Minutemen leading the way. The event was a great success in raising funds and elevating the public profile of the SAR. Lt. David Cox Chapter The Lt. David Cox Chapter met on June 14 for its regular meeting at Porky's Steak Restaurant in Galax, Va. In addition to our regular attendees, Susan Story represented the New River Pioneers Chapter DAR. President Billy Mitchell introduced Betty Patton, representing the Hale-Wilkinson- Carter Home Foundation in Gary Fraysier at the gravesite of TEC 4 Howard M. Henry in Normandy, France.
