34 SAR MAGAZINE West Fields Chapter The NJSSAR West Fields Chapter Color Guard, above, led by Compatriot Richard Blundin, presented the colors at the Somerset Patriots Minor League Baseball game July 10. The color guard regularly participates as the NJSSAR Color Guard at state meetings, parades and other civic events. Members also wear their uniforms at presentations to local schools and scouting groups on patriotism, genealogy, U.S. flag history and the Revolutionary War. The person holding up his thumb is one of the Somerset Patriots "mascots," named General Admission. EMPIRE STATE (NEW YORK) SOCIETY Columbia Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter Eighteen patriots who served in the Revolutionary War were remembered and honored in a Sept. 13 grave-marking ceremony sponsored by the Columbia Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter. The ceremony was held at the Terpenning Family Cemetery in Ulster Park, N.Y. Fifteen of the 18 graves have been identified, and all the patriot soldiers have had their resting place marked with a Revolutionary War flag marker and American flag. Guest speakers included a representative from state Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk's office and Vice President Joseph Fitzpat- rick, Capital Region, ESSAR. The master of ceremonies was Tim Middlebrook, president of Columbia Mid-Hudson Val- ley Chapter. Several descendants of the Terpenning Family attended the event. The First Ulster County Militia and American Legion Post 184 from Hudson, N.Y., provided the color guard. Long Island Chapter Compatriots are invited to join the Empire State Society and the Long Island Chapter on Sept. 12, 2015, as they celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Sons of the American Revolution by honoring President Theodore Roosevelt, a 20-year member of the SAR and the signer of the SAR's national charter. The day will include a luncheon, a presidential grave marking in Oyster Bay, N.Y., and a visit to Sagamore Hill, the home of the 26th president. Check the following websites for update information: www.longislandchaptersar.org and www.ess-sar.org . Rochester Chapter Compatriots Jim Eagan, Bob Coomber and Steve Clarke spent the morning of June 17 with the five classes of fourth graders at the Lakeshore Elementary School. The trio had 45 minutes to tell stories of patriot ancestors and the Revolutionary War. The students were excited to see and feel the period dress. The students, divided into two groups, enjoyed spirited question-and-answer opportunities, and a couple of them asked how to start their own genealogical research. NORTH CAROLINA SOCIETY The NCSSAR, in collaboration with Jas. Townsend & Son, has designed and made a mold of the special North Carolina buttons worn by some of the North Carolina Continental line. Those buttons are now for sale as cockades, shown in the photo below. A close examination will reveal the small "n" above and "c" below the central "U" of USA. The cockades are either tied on by the accompanying black ribbon or pinned on by the invisible, from this angle, coil-less pin. The pin has its origin in archeology and schol- arship about the Revolution. It is a pewter button that also can be used in other accouterments. More information about these cockades/buttons is on the NCSSAR website. Mecklenburg Chapter The Mecklenburg Chapter co-sponsored a patriot grave marking with the Mecklenburg Chapter, DAR, for Lewis Jetton IV at the Centre Presbyterian Church in Mooresville, N.C., on May 10. Patriot Jetton (1749-1826) is reported to have fired the first shot at the Battle of Cowan's Ford in January 1781. He is buried with his wife, Priscilla Sharpe. For his service, Jetton was granted Mecklenburg Chapter Secretary Ken Luckey, right, unveiled the SAR marker during the grave- marking ceremony for Patriot Lewis Jetton IV on May 10 at Centre Presbyterian Church in Mooresville, N.C.
