26 SAR MAGAZINE ARIZONA SOCIETY The Frontier Days Parade was held in Prescott, Ariz., on July 5. State Commander Steve Miller with several color guard members from chapters in Phoenix and Tucson joined the Prescott Chapter Color Guard. Two Boy Scouts from Troop 700—Sean Homes and Lewis Brownlee—carried the banner. Also participating were Bill Aurand, Marsha Aurand (DAR), Bill Smith, Steve Monez, Jim Johnson (TXSSAR), Chuck Howe, Kathleen Hearter (DAR), Dr. Thomas Steinback, State Registrar Dr. William Hearter, Jerry Davis and State Color Guard Commander Steve Miller. Tucson Chapter French foreign exchange students, right, visiting at St. Gregory's School in Tucson learned the 18th-century cannon drill with Dr. Rudy Byrd and the Tucson Chapter's newest member, Zakaria Lamri (in yellow Spanish soldado coat), and the Tucson Presidio Cannon. PPP Lance Dickinson and Al Niemeyer represented the Tucson Chapter Color Guard at the annual Flag Day Ceremony at SaddleBrooke on June 12. Compatriots Dickinson and Niemeyer participated with other members of the SaddleBrooke community in presenting U.S. flags from various eras to the assembled audience. CALIFORNIA SOCIETY On May 18, members of the Kern Chapter traveled deep into California's Mojave Desert wilderness for color guard duty. The occasion was the rededication of a monument to U.S. Air Force Maj. Michael J. Adams. Adams, the first American astronaut to lose his life during a space flight, crashed at this site on Nov. 15, 1967, following a re-entry accident in his X-15 spacecraft. Compatriot Greg Frazier was a co-builder of the monument in May 2004. During the next 10 years, many private citizens, as well as the federal government, pitched in to make the site a memorable destination for visitors. Recently, a group of historians decided it was time to rededicate the site and pay tribute to Adams and all who contributed to the development of the memorial. The color guard had to endure high winds during the ceremony, which was well attended. Participating in the Frontier Days celebration were, from left, Jim Johnson, Dr. William Hearter, the Hearters' daughter, Wayne Hood, Kathleen Hearter, Steve Monez and Dr. Thomas Steinback. News stories about state and chapter events appearing here and elsewhere in the magazine are prepared from materials submitted through a variety of means, including press releases and newsletters (which should be directed to the Editor at the address shown on page 2). Please note the deadlines below. Compatriots are encouraged to sub- mit ideas for historical feature articles they would like to write. Each will be given careful consideration. Deadlines: Winter (February) Dec. 15; Spring (May) March 15; Summer (August) June 15; Fall (November) Sept. 15. A few of the flag carriers at the Flag Day Ceremony, including two Buffalo Soldiers at left, and Compatriots Lance Dickinson and Albert Niemeyer at right.
