FALL 2014 31 chapter winner came in second place at the state competi- tion and received a check for $50. Christian Ardinger Chapter The Christian Ardinger Chapter, MDSSAR, hosted a picnic with the Antietam and Conococheague chapters of the DAR on Aug. 20. Chapter President Paul D. Banister solicited the DAR's assistance on a patriot index project the chapter is working on. The database will contain those who served from or resided in Washington County. A new applicant, the spouse of a DAR member, was recruited. This was the second joint picnic that has been held. Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore Chapter The Col. Nicholas Ruxton Moore Chapter, MDSSAR, responded to President General Joseph W. Dooley's call last year to support the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association's effort to return Washington to our schools. A beautifully framed replica of Rembrandt Peale's "porthole" portrait of George Washington now greets the students of Our Lady of Hope/St. Luke School thanks to the generosity of the chapter and the MVLA. Members of the chapter joined students at the school on May 30 to unveil the portrait. Our chapter's efforts were noted at the National Congress, along with other chapters nationwide that took up the challenge. Gen. William Smallwood Chapter The Gen. William Smallwood Chapter, MDSSAR, embarked on a project in the spring of 2013 to identify and document the Revolutionary War patriots buried in Montgomery County, Md. The MDSSAR Patriot and NSDAR Ancestor Indices revealed about 275 patriots known to be buried in the county or who died while residing there. Our volunteer webmaster, Clair Garman, developed a database template and linked it to both the MDSSAR and Gen. Smallwood Chapter websites. Each record is a separate Web page and displays the patriot's personal data (e.g., birth and death dates) and support for the American Revolution. The database, "Montgomery County, MD Patriot Grave Registry," may be accessed at www.marylandsar.org/ william-smallwood/PatriotGraves.htm . As this article was being written, 200 patriots had been entered into the Grave Registry. We expect all patriots to be entered in the registry by the fall of 2014. Once data entry is completed for all patriots, we will work on physically locating as many patriot graves as possible and recording their GPS coordinates. John Hanson Chapter The John Hanson Chapter had a busy June, presenting Eagle Scout awards. Chapter Secretary George Satterthwaite presented the NSSAR Eagle Scout Certificate of Recognition June 14 to Ion Wilmoth at the Troop 1572 Boy Scout Court of Honor at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Piscataway (Clinton, Md.). Wilmoth earned 23 merit badges, a memorial scholarship, awards from the governor of Maryland and the president of the Maryland Senate as well as numerous other national recognition certificates. His Eagle Scout project was the renovation of the Colonial kitchen at the National Colonial Farm in Accokeek, Md. The chapter supports eight Boy Scout programs throughout Prince George's County. Satterthwaite presented the NSSAR Eagle Scout Certificate of Recognition to Christopher Gessner June 18 at the Court of Honor for Troop 1038 (Marlton, Md.) at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Upper Marlboro, Md. Gessner earned 30 merit badges and was presented proclamations from the governor of Maryland and the president of the Maryland Senate and House of Delegates. He also was presented an American flag that had flown over the state capitol in early June. His project was the restoration of the historic gravesite of Robert Bowie at Our Lady of Mattaponi Retreat Center. On June 15, President Doug Stuart of the John Hanson Chapter of the MDSSAR presented an SAR Eagle Scout Certificate of Recognition to Michael William Crouch. The presentation is especially noteworthy because Michael's grand- father, the late Col. James F. King, was a former president of our chapter. Michael's mother, Mollie M. King, is an active member of the John Hanson Chapter, MDSDAR. John Hanson, for whom both chapters are named, was from Maryland and was the first president of the United States under the Articles of Confederation, which preceded our current Constitution. Little Meadows Chapter The Little Meadows Chapter held a business meeting/luncheon on June 21 in McHenry, Md. MDSSAR President Doug Favorite, who attended the meeting, inducted two new members into the chapter. Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter The Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter presented Cadet Ensign Robert Milburn the Outstanding JROTC Award on May 14 at the Linganore High School NJROTC Awards Assembly. The award is presented to a junior who has exhibited outstanding character and leadership and has maintained a 3.5 GPA. Milburn is a drill team commander and a member of the rifle team, qualifying to shoot on the Maryland State Air Rifle Team at the national level. At the assembly, Milburn was promoted to cadet lieutenant commander.
