FALL 2014 11 South Central District Decked out in Colonial attire, 41 members from Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas' South Central District, as well as a few NSSAR officers, joined President General Lindsey C. Brock for a photo. [Photo by Paul Ridenour] SAR Honors the 'Unknowns' President General Lindsey C. Brock presented a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery on Nov. 8. The tomb is guarded continuously by the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment, known as The Old Guard. It is a sacred place and all those present must remain in respectful silence. The tomb originally was dedicated to honor those killed in World War I and "unknowns" whose remains could not be identified from subsequent wars also were interred there. The inscription on the WWI Tomb reads: "Here Rests in Honored Glory an American Soldier Known But to God." In front of a large crowd, PG Brock was escorted by 3rd Infantry Guards of Honor and accompanied by VASSAR President William A. Broadus Jr., VASSAR George Washington Chapter President Scott A. Wagoner, and VASSAR Color Guard Commander Darrin Schmidt. Many SAR color guard members and regular SAR members also attended. The color guard added an impressive component to the ceremony as they took formation along the stairs leading to the tomb. The President General Wreath Laying at Arlington National Cemetery was hosted by the VASSAR George Washing- ton Chapter and has become a special annual tradition. "It is important that we continue to pay our respects and honor those who have given everything to defend our country," said Wagoner. "And we are especially honored to host this annual event in support of the National Society and the President General." President General Lindsey C. Brock, center, with VASSAR President William A. The frst issue of the The NSSAR Veterans Bugle was scheduled to hit SAR members' email inboxes in November. As a part of President General Lindsey Brock's Veterans Recognition Committee (VRC) Initiatives, 2014-2015, the purpose of the newsletter is "to keep our veterans and leadership informed of the various ongoing recognition programs available to us." Edited by retired Marine Corps Col. Charles T. Sweeney (FLSSAR), the newsletter will be distributed via email no less than three times a year. George Washington President General Lindsey C. Brock's Message Many Americans mistakenly believe that Veterans Day is the day America sets aside to honor American military personnel who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained from combat. That's not quite true! Memorial Day is the day set aside to honor America's War dead. On Veterans Day we honor all Veterans, both living and dead. Veterans Day, however, is intended mainly to thank LIVING veterans for dedicated and loyal service to country. In this regard, I say on behalf of all our members that those who served are not just Veterans, they are unique Compatriots. Like our forefathers, who gave us our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and independent Supreme Court, and a Nation of Free Men, they are heroes. We owe so much to them. Let us never forget them nor forget the sacrifices they made for us. Clearly, their service to country is deeply appreciated. Lindsey C.
