30 SAR MAGAZINE Society. Letters were read from the president, senators, congressmen, the governor and the mayor. SAR President General Joseph W. Dooley and DAR President General Lynn F. Young sent greetings, as did the INSSAR and INDAR, and C.A.R. Senior National President Hans Jackson. The celebration began with the Society sergeant-at-arms leading the INSSAR Color Guard to present the colors. The program chaired by the Society president included Society alumnus Jeff Voris (joined in 1985), who shared how important the C.A.R. was to him. He now is a member of the William Henry Harrison Chapter SAR, and is Senior President of the Little Eagle Creek Society, C.A.R., and Senior Vice President of the National C.A.R. IOWA SOCIETY The Society took part in the Iowa Genealogical Society's Open House on June 21. Representing the Central Iowa Chapter were Volney Smith, state secretary/treasurer and past president, and 1st Vice President Alan Wenger. Other local societies included two DAR chapters and a C.A.R. chapter. The compatriots handed out pamphlets and lineage worksheets to several people and had patriotic wrapped candy and temporary tattoos for the kids. Wenger was dressed in a Continental soldier's coat, vest and hat and was the subject of several photos taken. Edee Brunia, past regent of the Jean Marie Cardinell Chapter, DAR, was also dressed in period attire. The event lasted about four hours and quite a few interested people stopped to ask questions and take literature. PPP Members of the Iowa Society joined with other lineage societies, including the DAR and General Society War of 1812, for Iowa's largest July 4th parade. KENTUCKY SOCIETY Captain William Arnold Chapter Jackie Miller, president and registrar of the Captain William Arnold Chapter, met with baseball legend Pete Rose, right, to review his SAR application and a genealogy book titled Huntington Family Vol. 1, which was published in January 2006 and written and published by Compatriot Miller. This book traces Miller's and Rose's lines back to William I, King of Scotland, aka "The Lion." The branch also includes lines to Cleveland Browns Head Coach Paul Brown and former University of Kentucky Wildcat and No. 1 NFL draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Tim Couch. Rose traces his family back to Revolutionary War soldier Jacob Surber, who served as an Indian spy in Capt. Jonathan Denton's militia and as a private under Capt. George Rinker (1781). MAINE SOCIETY Representatives of the Maine Color Guard with the Abbot Historical Society and the DAR conducted a memorial service June 28 for Jacob Smith Leeman (1758-1834), a Revolutionary War veteran from Abbot, Maine.
