FALL 2014 35 land in Mecklenburg County in the Davidson area. "Working with Regent Miriam Smith of the Mecklenburg Chapter, DAR, is a real privilege for our chapter," said Mecklenburg Chapter President Jay Joyce. "The DAR grave- marking service is a wonderful blending of patriotic, religious and musical tribute. Our two chapters are already planning future events to work together to further the missions of both the DAR and SAR." OHIO SOCIETY On Sept. 12, a naturalization ceremony was held at Lawnfield, the home of President James A. Garfield, a National Historic Site in Mentor, Ohio. The Ohio Society Combined Color Guard of the Western Reserve Society, Northeast Ohio Chapter and Samuel Huntington Chapter presented and retired the colors for the ceremony. Thirty people took the Oath of Citizenship administrated by U.S. District Magistrate Judge William H. Baughman. There were remarks from state Sen. John Eklund and state Reps. Ron Young and John Rogers. Rudolph Garfield, President Garfield's great-grandson, congratulated the new citizens, and the League of Women Voters distributed voter registration information. Fifty eighth-grade students and Principal Mike Fasciano from All Saints School of St. John Vianney in Wickliffe, Ohio, also attended the ceremony as part of a civics class. Two of the students presented American flags to the new citizens. Troy Bailey from the Northeast Ohio Chapter distributed cards on how to properly display and care for the American flag. The Ohio Society Combined Color Guardsmen included, from the Western Reserve Society: John Franklin, Hugh Harris and Lee MacBride; from the Northeast Ohio Chapter: Troy Bailey, Dan Matheke, Steve Hinson and Don Taft; and from the Samuel Huntington Chapter: Robert Parvin. Hocking Valley Chapter Members of the Hocking Valley Chapter proudly displayed their new chapter flag at a meeting in Lancaster, Ohio. The flag primarily was designed by Chapter President Carl Roshong with consultation from chapter members. Carl stands second from the left holding the flag. The flag mimics Gen. George Washington's headquarters flag, which also had white, six-pointed stars in a dark blue field. The center of the flag features a log cabin against a background that includes the Hocking River and forested hills with a rising sun, similar to the Ohio State Seal. It reflects the pioneer history of the Hocking Valley counties where the chapter is active. Many of Ohio's early pioneers were veterans of the Revolutionary War, coming to the Old Northwest Territory to claim war bounty lands. Western Reserve Chapter The Western Reserve Society's Archibald Willard Color Guard stepped off and led the Gates Mills Fourth of July Parade—the 18th Independence Day parade in Gates Mills in honor of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was a fun-filled event, with fire engines, bands, floats, calliopes, big trucks, antique cars, bicycles, horses and foxhounds. At the program following the parade, Fred Watkins, past president and essay contest chairman, was introduced and presented Gates Mills Elementary fourth-grader Eryn Attending a naturalization ceremony at Lawnfield, right, were the eighth-grade class from All Saints School of St. John Vianney, above, and the SAR Color Guard.
