The award, presented regionally, pays tribute to a National Park Service volunteer based on nominations from across the country. Sholl is the northeast winner. Sholl lives in Palm Desert, Calif., but has returned to his native Philadelphia several times a year for more than 25 years to act as a volunteer guide at Independence National Historic Park. His knowledge of history and charming eloquence make him outstanding in this role. Sholl delivered a memorable public address at the 225th Anniversary Day of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 15, 2012, at Independence Hall. The RISSAR attended a gathering Feb. 21 for a local historic militia company to start a fundraising drive to preserve a copy of its original legislative charter. This event was held at the armory of the Pawtuxet Rangers, who were chartered by the Colony of Rhode Island in 1774 to protect the Village of Pawtuxet. The copy of its 1777 charter was made by thencompany clerk John Waterman Jr. The 236-year-old document was unexpectedly located at an auction house in Boston.
