ILLINOIS SOCIETY On Feb. 6, the ILSSAR presented a gift to French Consul General Graham Paul to mark the date of the 235th anniversary signing of the Treaty of Alliance between the United States and France. The Society presented a framed historical York Current newspaper front page that breaks the news to the English of the treaty between the United States and France. Upon the signing of the treaty on Feb. 6, 1778, France officially recognized the United States as an independent nation, whereupon England declared war on France, directly engaging that country in the American Revolution. France's entry into the war provided muchneeded arms, gunpowder, supplies and troops. ILSSAR President Bruce Talbot presented the gift to Paul and noted that the French supplies marked the beginning of the turning point in the Revolutionary War. Paul offered a Champagne toast to the alliance between the two countries and recalled the famous line spoken at the arrival of the American Army in France during World War I: "Lafayette, nous sommes ici," ("Lafayette, we are here"). The presentation was attended by uniformed members of the ILSSAR Color Guard and chapter presidents from Fort Dearborn, Fox Valley, Salt Creek and American Bicentennial chapters. Springfield Chapter The chapter participated in the Boy Scouts of America Abraham Lincoln Council Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner at the Illinois State Capitol on Feb. 25. Seventy-two new Eagle Scouts from the Centennial Class of 2012 were presented SAR Eagle Scout Certificates in a ceremony held in the Illinois State House Chamber, marking the 100th year of the Abraham Lincoln Council Eagle Scout Recognition Ceremony.
