Please note the deadlines below. Compatriots are encouraged to submit ideas for historical feature articles they would like to write. Each will be given careful consideration. Deadlines: Winter (February) Dec. 15; Spring (May) March 15; Summer (August) June 15; Fall (November) Sept. 15. From left, Howard Schramm, Art Dillman, Huey Kirk, Wayne Simon, Jeff Chandler, John Dwyer and C.W. Posey Jr. ALABAMA SOCIETY The General Galvez Chapter SAR held its annual awards and new officer induction ceremonies at Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile on Jan. 12, with 41 guests and members attending. President Mack Matthews called the meeting to order, Chaplain Leroy McGaughy gave the induction, and all participated in the Pledge of Allegiance and Pledge to the SAR. Matthews welcomed Alabama State SAR President C.W. Posey Jr. and his wife, Hilda, and then recognized all the other guests. A memorial service was held for Compatriot George Kendley, a chapter member and World War II veteran who had recently died. His widow, Elizabeth, and daughter Allison attended. George was known and loved by all and will be greatly missed. His intellect, wit and wisdom were assets to our chapter. Matthews recognized several members for their service to the SAR and presented medals, Oak Leaf Clusters and certificates to them. Chapter member Dr. Barry Booth received a Service for Veterans Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster for his accomplishments on the Alabama Veterans Cemetery and the Greatest Generation Memorial 24 flights to Washington, D.C. He gave a stirring talk about his experiences with both of these projects and also presented a personal, heartwarming account of George Kendley on the Memorial flight. Posey conducted the 2013 installation of officers ceremony and passed the gavel to new Chapter President Col. Jack Dwyer. Posey also presented the General Galvez Chapter with a flag streamer from the National SAR in recognition of involvement in veterans affairs. Next, he presented the coveted National Meritorious Service medal and Certificate of Appreciation to Price Legg, who has participated in SAR activities on the national, state and chapter levels for many years. He has been chapter president, state president and national trustee and has served on numerous national, state and chapter committees. He is indispensable to the SAR. Posey called Matthews forward and presented him with the Chapter Meritorious Service Medal, Certificate of Appreciation and Past President's pin. Dwyer gave a short talk on the oldest patriot at the Battle of Concord, a 79-year-old freedom lover. Dwyer is an expert on the American Revolution, Civil War and other historical events. He enjoys speaking to other organizations and groups about our American heritage. In closing, Posey gave a talk on "The Common American Soldier" in the American Revolution. ARIZONA SOCIETY On Feb. 9, the Arizona Society Color Guard posted the colors for the Boston Scientific Convention at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix. The promoters had the event well choreographed with a dark room, stage, special lighting and sound for our presentation. With the assistance of our SAR MAGAZINE
