At Cherbourg, surrounded by naval officers and
sailors, the hero's casket was put aboard U.S. Rear
Admiral Charles Dwight Sigsbee's flagship, the
Brooklyn. For the voyage home, the ship carrying Jones
was attended by the entire squadron: the Chattanooga,
the Galveston and the Tacoma. During the transfer to the
Brooklyn, the French accorded Jones the honors of vice
admiral. Although Jones had never held that rank in
the American Navy, he would be so honored with it
upon his arrival in the United States. Two other naval
squadrons were awaiting his return as his convoy
passed through the Virginia Capes into Hampton
Roads. The coffin bearing Jones' body was then
transferred to a launch and taken to Annapolis, where
