30 SAR MAGAZINE NEBRASKA SOCIETY Each February, as close to George Washington's birth date as practicable, the Lincoln Chapter hosts a Heritage Day with a meeting and dinner in Lincoln, Neb. This year, Heritage Day was held on Saturday, Feb. 21. Various heritage society members attended. Those societies repre- sented included the DAR, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Sons of Confederate Veterans of the Civil War, Society of the War of 1812, as well as the Mayflower and Huguenot Societies, to name a few. Attendees are from throughout Nebraska. Three veterans and military service retirees who are Nebraska SAR members attended the meeting this year. Pictured, from left, are Col. David K. Kentsmith (USAF, ret.), M.D., a past Omaha Chapter president, current state vice president and state secretary; Rev. Dr. Col. James Hoke (USA, ret.), a past Lincoln Chapter president and current second vice president of the NESSAR; and Chief Command Master Sgt. Robert Lee Knott Jr. (USA, ret.), who also is a past Omaha Chapter president and past NESSAR president. All three dressed in their formal-mess dress uniforms for the event. NEVADA SOCIETY Northern Nevada Chapter The Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nev., opened its Wreaths Across America program Saturday, Dec. 13, at 9 a.m. to coincide with the nationwide event. The Northern Nevada Chapter assisted with the ceremonial placement of several wreaths at the memorial wall, honoring the U.S. armed services' fve branches. Following this, the chapter placed wreaths at the graves of veterans throughout the cemetery. All veterans' markers in the cemetery were decorated, with more than 5,800 wreaths placed. The event was organized by the Northern Nevada Veterans Coalition, which invited the Northern Nevada Chapter and other veterans groups to attend, along with community members. Glenna Smith, representing Nevada's U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, met with and greeted the compatriots of the chapter following the ceremony, and she praised their participation. The North- ern Nevada Chapter members were all in Revolution- ary War uniform. NVSSAR Trustee Bri- an Worces- ter wore his Union Army uniform to represent his mem- bership in the Sons of Union Vet- erans of the Civil War, and also participated in the ceremo- nial wreath laying at the memorial wall for the fve service branches. Worcester is a cousin of Morrill Worcester of Worcester's Wreaths, who founded the Wreaths Across America program. NEW HAMPSHIRE SOCIETY NHSSAR Past President Don Hayes was recognized for 20 years of continuous service to the state society. State President Bob Walsh and Awards Chairman James Veach presented him with a certificate. Hayes has been active in the NHSSAR Color Guard and educational re-enacting. Five NHSSAR State Society presidents attended the winter meeting. They were Hayes, Walsh, Ben Hampton, Hans Jackson and Doug Wood. NEW MEXICO SOCIETY The Palace of the Governors (Casa Real) first occupied in 1610, has been named a National Treasure. This is the 55th site so designated in the United States by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The building was originally the Santa Fe Presidio for the Spanish garrison in Neuva Espania and then the office of the territorial governors for the U.S. It has served as a centerpiece on the plaza in Santa Fe, N.M., since 1610. The building is thought to be the oldest in the U.S. that has been in continuous use. On Jan. 28 a ceremony was held at the Palace to celebrate the designation and was attended by more than 200 dignitaries and citizens. The NMSSAR Color Guard, wearing Spanish Presidio soldier uniforms, was proud to present the colors for the ceremony and to discuss with the guests the history of the building and its use over the centuries. Descendants of the Presidio soldiers, including two of our NMSSAR Color Guard—Lionel Rael and George Garcia—have become SAR members. Their ancestors supported the American Revolution with funds collected at the request of King Philip of Spain and used to buy supplies for the Continental Army. After the Civil War, Lew Wallace, territorial governor, used the building's corner office to complete the last two chapters of his book, Ben Hur. The NMSSAR was instrumental in having a plaque placed on the wall of the main entrance honoring the Presidio soldiers who served in or supported the American Revolution. NORTH CAROLINA SOCIETY Lower Cape Fear Chapter Members of various regions of the NCSSAR and 17 other lineage/historical societies participated in the 239th observation of the Battle of the Widow Moores Creek. The The NHSSAR Color Guard poses for a membership promotional video shot by the NHSSAR and now available on its website at nhssar.org. Compatriots Paul Hicks, Col. Edward Carson (USA, Ret.), Roger Linscott, Trustee Brian Worcester, and Glenna Smith representing Nevada U.S. Sen. Dean Heller.
