SPRING 2015 29 Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter Compatriots Charles Lawrence Bishop and Richard Lee Stup, and Braddock Heights resident James Edward Smith were honored with the Liberty Medal, recognizing each for his sponsorship of 10 new members in the chapter. The commendation was offered at the chapter's annual meeting, conducted at Dutch's Daughter. The Liberty Medal, depicting a bust of the Statue of Liberty struck in bronze and suspended from a gold ribbon, commemorates the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. Thomas Stone Chapter The Thomas Stone Chapter presented a George Washington Portrait to Windy Hill Elementary School in Owings, Md. on Dec. 19, 2014. The chapter has presented portraits to all but three elementary schools in Charles County. In St. Mary's County, all the public elementary schools have portraits, and the chapter also has presented them at three private schools. Under the leadership of Compatriot Howard Booth, the chapter continues to move forward to place the portraits in schools in Calvert County. Westminster Chapter The Westminster Chapter held its Flag Award ceremony on Dec. 3, 2014 at the home of the flag owners, Joyce and William Lizor Sr. Chapter President-Elect Jim Engler presented William Lizor with the SAR Flag Certificate of Commendation in recognition of exemplary patriotism in the display of the flag of the United States. Lizor is known for an extensive flag display across his yard on Memorial Day each year, as well as displaying the flag both during the day and illuminated at night. MICHIGAN SOCIETY Paul Emery Chapter To preserve the memory and principles bestowed by our forefathers, the Paul Emery Chapter donated a portrait of Gen. George Washington to Lapeer High School in Michigan. The portrait adorns the school's main hallway, where students and staff alike will be reminded of their history each day as they pass by. Dr. Robert Sprague of Grand Blanc, Mich., president of the chapter, spoke to students, staff and city officials as he presented the portrait. Sprague, along with members of the MISSAR Color Guard, wore full Revolutionary War regalia. Also attending was School Superintendent Matt Wandrie. MINNESOTA SOCIETY Duane L.C.M. Galles is a past president of Minnesota SAR and SR, past head of five national lineage societies, and an internationally recognized expert on heraldry. At the recent society meeting, he brought a fascinating, scholarly address entitled, "The American Century and the Renaissance of Heraldry in America." He also had a display of the personal coat of arms of two MNSSAR compatriots, as well as his own. Galles explained that there was great interest in heraldry during the 17th and 18th centuries and that it fell into disfavor during Andrew Jackson's presidency. In the 1890s, heraldry enjoyed a resurgence coinciding with the United States becoming a world power. Galles cited U.S. and world events from the early 1890s through the early 1920s and noted the expanded interest in heraldry by universities, the church, the armed forces and others during those years. PPP The Fall Meeting of the MNSSAR was held Oct. 4, 2014, at Jax Cafe, in conjunction with the Minnesota Sons of the Revolution. Including compatriots, spouses and guests, the total attendance was 54. Vice President John Sassaman of the MNSSAR led the Pledge of Allegiance and SR Chaplain Michael Swisher offered the invocation. Past President John Hallberg Jones reported on the most recent issue of Minnesota History Magazine, which had a fascinating article on the menus of elegant events of the past. One of the featured items was the Washington Day Dinner of the Minnesota SR held Feb. 22, 1919, nearly a century ago. It had been a festive affair, with a most extensive menu. The program of the day was presented by Hon. David Sinclair Bouschor, retired Minnesota district judge. Entitled "The Anatomy of Justice," his presentation included anecdotes of trials over which he presided during his career on the bench. MISSOURI SOCIETY Ozark Mountain Chapter Compatriot Howard Fisk from the Ozark Mountain Chapter and his daughter, Hillary, had an hour-long visit with Compatriot Sen. Roy Blunt in his Washington, D.C., office. Hillary is an officer in the Eleanor Wilson Chapter, DAR, in Washington, D.C., and is involved her chapter's Viet Nam Commemoration. Compatriot Fisk took the chapter's banner to discuss the value of the Viet Nam Commemoration and the chapter's good works. Blunt was cordial and led a wide- ranging discussion on everything from our shared family heritage to the upcoming legislative session. Blunt sent his warmest regards to compatriots of the Ozark Mountain Chapter. From left, Compatriot Howard Fisk, his daughter Hillary and Sen. Roy Blunt.
