The San Diego Chapter awarded Sheads this medal for his work in securing a U.S. flag that flew over Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine to be flown over the USS Midway as part of the 1812 Bicentennial Celebrations in June. On Jan. 17, after Sheads spoke at an 1812 annual luncheon at the Maryland Club, he was presented the SAR medal and certificate by past President General Joseph W. Dooley (2013-2014), who was accompanied by the presidents of the MDSSAR and 1812 Society. Gen. William Smallwood Chapter The Gen. William Smallwood Chapter met Dec. 4, 2014 at the Knights of Columbus Council Hall in Silver Spring, Md. President Michael Saunders presented an SAR Certificate of Distinguished Service to Sugarloaf Monuments for the company's role in producing grave markers with the SAR logo for six patriots buried at the Monocacy Cemetery in Beallsville. Saunders also presented SAR Flag Certificates to Juan Luis and Linda Torres and Brad and Mindy Tuttle of Takoma Park. The featured speaker was Glenn Wallace, registrar for the Monocacy Cemetery (Beallsville, Md.), discussing his nine-year effort to document the more than 5,000 burials at the cemetery, including family genealogy and photographs, and his work with the chapter to identify patriots buried there and arrange for the installation of granite grave markers. During the meeting, MDSSAR Secretary Pat Warner inducted five members of the Searles family and Eugene Stohlman into the chapter. Col. Tench Tilghman Chapter The chapter presented the Rev. Melvin Brindley of Ches- tertown Baptist Church with a certificate of commendation for "exemplary patriotism in the display of the flag of the United States of America." The presentation was made Feb. 28 at its regular chapter luncheon. The chapter presents the Flag Certificate annually to a candidate from Caroline, Kent, Queen Anne's and Talbot counties in Maryland. John Hanson Chapter The John Hanson Chapter participated in a Court of Honor for four Eagle Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 1572 on Sunday, March 1, at the sponsor church, St. Mary's Catholic of Piscataway in Clinton, Md. Two of the recipients of the SAR Certificate of Outstanding Achievement were brothers, with one of the brothers waiting two years to be awarded his Eagle Scout so he could be with his brother. They had earned an impressive array of merit badges, 27-29 each. Their Eagle Scout projects were equally impressive and most deserving of the SAR award for excellence in leadership, love of country and duty to family. Certificates of Outstanding Achievement were presented to Sam Carts, Alex True, Michael True and Joseph Walzel Jr. by George Satterthwaite, John Hanson Chapter secretary at Troop 1572's Court of Honor. John Paul Jones Chapter Thirty-five people attended the annual chapter Christmas party held at the Rising Sun Inn Dec. 7, 2014, including members of the Ann Arundel Chapter DAR, National Society of Daughters of 1812 President Ginger Apyar and family members of the JPJ Chapter members.
