26 SAR MAGAZINE Piankeshaw Chapter On Feb. 13, Chapter President Allen Cooke, center, and Regent Julie Woller of the Alliance Chapter presented to Master Sgt. Jason Staub checks totaling more than $3,000 toward Operation Restore Old Glory—replacing the American flag, flagpole and related roof work on the University of Illinois Armory in Champaign-Urbana, Ill. INDIANA SOCIETY Compatriots Doug Roush, Stuart Hart and Rod Sherard (Clarence A. Cook Chapter) and Dennis Boone (Alexander Hamilton Chapter) presented a program to four schools in February. Each school held a convocation of the fifth- graders who are studying the American Revolutionary War, with 150-200 students in each presentation. Compatriot Roush is pictured, below, discussing the Declaration of Independence, explaining the difference between the one that was rushed into printing, and the one that was signed. PPP Compatriots from several INSSAR chapters performed a veterans honor program that included a musket salute. The program is an annual festival given by a popular country- western entertainer for his fans. Included in the program were a salute to the veterans attending and the color guard manning the flagpole. The old flag was lowered and folded, while the crowd of about 650 watched silently. Taps was played. Next, the old flag was handed to one of two veterans selected to represent all veterans past. A new flag was retrieved from the other veteran and raised briskly up the flagpole as the national anthem was sung, followed by a musket salute. Afterward, the color guard passed by the 60 veterans standing in a prominent place, thanking each for their service. IOWA SOCIETY Iowa SAR members Danny Krock and Mike Rowley joined fellow SAR member Bill Campbell, who is also the commander of Chapter 1979 Department of Iowa Military Order of the Purple Heart, in a celebration of Washington's birthday on Feb. 12. Compatriot Rowley shared Iowa's Revolutionary War connection and President General (2013-2014) Joseph Dooley's article, "What Rank Is Gen. Washington?" (Spring 2014 issue, page 12) with Purple Heart recipients and guests. There also was a discussion on how best to partner on projects of interest to both groups. Local grade-school students made a patriotic placemat for each Purple Heart recipient. KENTUCKY SOCIETY In 2008, the NSSAR purchased the Fulton Conway Building, an 1850-era tobacco storage building, on West Main Street in Louisville, Ky., to relocate its library and headquarters. As a member of the "inspection" team to evaluate the building, I was looking for a cornerstone in the building, but it did not have one. Brother Master Mason and President General David Appleby (2008-2009) and I formed a plan to have a symbolic cornerstone-laying ceremony at the Fall 2009 Leadership meeting. Elements of the ceremony included: n Inviting Grand Master and his line officers of Grand Lodge of Kentucky Free & Accepted Masons, plus all NSSAR Master Masons and Master Masons of Louisville Lodge No. 400. n George Washington's gavel from Potomac Lodge. n George Washington's trowel, which was used when he laid the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol in 1793, borrowed with permission from the archives of Alexandria-Washington Lodge. n Commemorative Masonic aprons for all Masons, purchased at a profit for the SAR Center for Advancing America's Heritage. Fast forward to 2015: The Grand Lodge of Kentucky F. & A.M. is being contacted about the possibility of forming a new Masonic Lodge in Louisville that only NSSAR/Master Masons can join. Brother and Compatriot Les Foster said, "By having this lodge, Historical Lodge George Washington and Masonic Founding Fathers of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky F. & A.M., would be an asset to both The Grand Lodge and the NSSAR." We are updating the 2008 list of NSSAR Master Masons and Past Masters as the foundation and charter members of the new lodge. SAR members have been asked to seek other Master Masons in their chapters. There are more than 200 men on my current list, but I'm sure there are many more who qualify. We also are adding new members to the NSSAR chapters and to lodges across the country. If interested, please contact me: J. Michael Jones, Jjones3549@cox.net, 212 West Country Gables Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85023-5250. MARYLAND SOCIETY The MDSSAR has donated $1,000 to the Preserve the Pensions national initiative sponsored by the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Past President Ivan Dooley Jr. investigated the program with Rebecca Koford, a tremendous advocate for this project, and made the recommendation during the January board meeting. It was unanimously approved. The goal of the initiative is to digitize the 1812 Pensions, which are among the most requested documents at the National Archives that are in preservation danger because of their fragile nature. More than 7 million pages are planned to be digitized using private funds. For each dollar donated, two pages will be digitized. Ancestry.com has provided a dollar-for- dollar matching grant. This initiative is important to the SAR because it is often the one generation that most people have problems linking to their American Revolutionary ancestor. With A-Z to be completed and made free online, we can help so many more applicants. PPP
