Treasurer John Parsons will serve another two years. On Feb. 22, in celebration of George Washington's birthday, the Lincoln Chapter hosted the second annual Founders Dinner for the State of Nebraska in Lincoln. Lincoln Chapter President James Hoke, a retired Army chaplain and colonel, was the master of ceremonies. He presented a certificate of appreciation to Mary Ann Bede of Lincoln, who gave a history of American Red Cross founder Clara Barton. Other patriotic organizations represented were DAR, C.A.R., Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Sons of Confederate Veterans of the Civil War, Descendants of Veterans of War of 1812, Huguenot Society, American Legion and VFW. Other state SAR members attending included, above, Lincoln Chapter member Robert Chandler; State President Fred Walden; Lincoln Chapter Vice President Shawn Stoner; past State President, newsletter editor and Deputy State Registrar Robert Knott; and current State Registrar Thomas Masters. Lincoln Chapter This past year, the Lincoln Chapter initiated a statewide celebration of patriotism with an annual American Heritage Dinner. This dinner will be held in Lincoln every Feb. 22. Members of Nebraska patriotic genealogical societies such as the SAR, DAR, War of 1812, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and the Mayflower Society, to name a few, are invited. The event includes a patriotic program and presen- tations. NESSAR members are encouraged to attend and can reserve a place by contacting the Lincoln Nebraska chapter secretary or the chapter president. The NESSAR had a unique event to celebrate—the approval of membership and initiation of all qualified living male descendants (five) of our State President Fred Walden this past year. The new members include the three sons and two grandsons of Fred and his wife, Jan. They are: sons Timothy Lee Walden, Kevin Arthur Walden and Frederick Charles Walden, and grandsons Frederick James Walden and Brian Michael Walden. NEVADA SOCIETY Northern Chapter On Jan 9, the Northern Chapter awarded the War Service Medal to retired U.S. Army Maj. Almon Copley. Compatriot Copley, 93, fought in the China-Burma-India theater in World War II. He received his medal from Chapter President David Hess at the Emeritus Center at Gardnerville, Nev. During the Northern Chapter's second Annual George Washington Birthday Luncheon, eight veterans of conflicts in WWII, Korea, the Cuban missile crisis and Vietnam were honored for their service. The veterans of the Army, Air Force and Navy were awarded the War Service Medal. Among those honored were compatriots Ike Eichbaum, Jack Linscott, Bill Semerau, Eric Arentz, Wilbur Young, Brian Worcester, Ed Carson and Chip MacLeod. Also at the luncheon, Compatriot Arentz was presented the Service to Veterans Medal for his longtime, ongoing ser- vice to veterans at events such as the Reno DAV homeless kitchen, the Northern Nevada Regional Veterans Affairs Hospital, the DAV quad raffles and fundraising and Wreaths Across America. NEW HAMPSHIRE SOCIETY The NHSSAR toured the Minuteman National Battle site at its fall meeting. Compatriot Joel Andrews, founder of Concord Guides and author of guidebooks on the area, led the tour, right. Dr. Andrews spoke at the Minuteman statue. EMPIRE STATE (NEW YORK) SOCIETY Columbia Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter Compatriots from the Columbia Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter took part in a grave-marking ceremony in Durham, N.Y., after the chapter was approached by the descen- dants of Samuel Scoville, an ensign in the Connecticut Militia. A member of Capt. Cornelius Higgins' company, Scoville was at the battles of Long Island and White Plains and served from June to December 1776. Approximately 20 Scoville descendants from Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina traveled to New York for the grave marking. Members placed a permanent flag mark- er on the grave. Attending were Andrew Middlebrook, William Thorne, Art Bowen, Columbia Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter President Tim Middlebrook, Hank Croteau and Richard Wambach. Rochester Chapter Despite the bitter cold and deep snow, the Rochester Chapter again visited students in January and February when the state's seventh-grade social studies curriculum addresses the Revolutionary War. Compatriots Bill Brewer, Steve Clarke, Bob Coomber, Brent Downing, Jim Eagan, Dick Eagleton, Bob Fuller and Mike Tunison put on their period kit to visit the Rochester School for the Deaf and the Greece Central District's Athena Middle School to share stories of their Revolutionary War ancestors, and the war in western New York, and about life in general during the Revolution. Those at the School for the Deaf were surprised and pleased to see Chapter Member Bob Fuller, himself severely hearing impaired, using American Sign Language to deliver 34 SAR MAGAZINE From left, Roger Linscott, Robert Levy with sons Christopher and Mitchell, Almon Copley, Brian Worcester, Northern Chapter President David Hess and John Ryland.
