SPRING 2014 33 Hawaii, holds dual membership in the MASSAR (Old Middlesex Chapter) and the Hawaii Society SAR. The Old Middlesex Chapter recognized Bratt's three-decade law enforcement career that includes more than 20 years with the U.S. Customs Service's Office of Investigations. Bratt retired from the Department of Homeland Security as a supervisory special agent. His career involved investigations into myriad federal law violations, including drug smuggling, money laundering, theft and export of critical technology, fraud and child exploitation. His travels investigating cases took him throughout Micronesia, Polynesia, Melanesia, Australia and New Zealand. Bratt makes his home in Hawaii now but spends several weeks each year in New England researching four other ancestral lines dating to the Revolution. MICHIGAN SOCIETY River Raisin Chapter How does one offer compatriots of the SAR a lasting legacy of their membership in our society and at the same time help fund the continuing work of the SAR Foundation? Jerry Reed Sr., president of the River Raisin Chapter and past state secretary, Michigan Society, recently completed a quest to design and produce a stunning ring featuring a raised, hand-carved profile cameo of George Washington on black onyx or red agate stone, the SAR logo and American eagle with 13 stars on the shoulders. Around the crown is the SAR motto: "LIBERTAS ET PATRIA," and the dates: "Revolutionary War 1775-1783, Founding of the SAR 1889." This ring was designated the official SAR membership ring of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution on March 1. It all started when Reed was trying to come up with a fundraising idea to support the NSSAR Foundation. A friendship with John Sanger of Regnas Jewelry led to the idea of an SAR membership ring that could be offered to compatriots as part of a pledge to the SAR Foundation. After several prototype rings were made, Reed was faced with the daunting task of having his ring and idea approved by the NSSAR. Finally, the ring, with NSSAR and SAR Foundation support, was approved by the NSSAR Executive Committee. With a contribution of $30 to the SAR Foundation, a compatriot may purchase an official membership ring in solid sterling silver, 9k gold, or gold-plated solid sterling silver. It will reflect the pride of membership to those who wear it and undoubtedly will become a family heirloom to be passed down to sons and grandsons who become SAR members. Please check the NSSAR website for more information on how to make your donation and purchase an SAR membership ring. Congratulations to Reed for taking an idea and developing it into a real contribution to the Sons of the American Revolution. NEBRASKA SOCIETY During the January meeting of the Omaha Chapter, new officers for 2014-15 were installed. They are: President Thomas Conley and Richard Ewing, vice president and sec- retary. Ewing is continuing his job as secretary but also add- ing the new responsibilities of vice president. Chapter SPRING_14_sar28-39.indd 33 5/7/14 5:24 PM
