News stories about state and chapter events appearing here and elsewhere in the magazine are prepared from materials submitted through a variety of means, including press releases and newsletters (which should be directed to the Editor at the address shown on page 2). Please note the deadlines below. Compatriots are encouraged to submit ideas for historical feature articles they would like to write. Each will be given careful consideration. Deadlines: Winter (February) Dec. 15; Spring (May) March 15; Summer (August) June 15; Fall (November) Sept. 15. ALABAMA SOCIETY The ALSSAR held its 125th State Convention in Dothan, Ala., on Feb. 14-15. The newly elected 2014-15 officers were installed at the Saturday evening annual banquet by James A. "Jim" Morock Sr., 2013-14 Vice President General, Southern District. Thanks to Past President Rev. Marvin K. Vickers and the Wiregrass Chapter, ALSSAR, for a wonderful convention. PPP Compatriot Bill Stone was honored as historian of the year for 2013 at the Alabama Society Daughters of the American Revolution State Convention March 7 in Auburn. Stone is a member of the Gen. John Archer Elmore Chapter in Prattville. Mary Buehler, regent of the Atagi Chapter, ASDAR, in Prattville, nominated Stone for his work organizing and presenting the Articles of Association as a Historical and Youth Outreach Program. Buehler said the program reached nearly 25,000 middle and high school students, civic, patriotic and historical groups in Alabama during 2013. The borrowed document was the penned signa- ture page of the Articles of Association signed by many of our founding fathers on Oct. 20, 1774, dur- ing the First Continental Congress. Stone was assisted by Gen. John Archer Elmore Chapter compatriots Mack Clark and Richard Wells during the outreach program. ARIZONA SOCIETY Members of the Arizona Society Color Guard from Phoenix and Prescott participated in the 69th annual Iwo Jima Memorial Parade Feb. 22 in Sacaton, Ariz., Gila River Indian Reservation. The parade honors the late Ira Hayes from Sacaton. Hayes helped raise the flag over Iwo Jima dur- ing World War II. CALIFORNIA SOCIETY Thirty compatriots participated in a joint SAR Color Guard during the 32nd Massing of the Colors and Salute to Our Armed Forces on Feb. 16 (top of opposite page). Representatives from 10 CASSAR chapters attended. About a dozen women of the SAR Ladies Auxiliary and members of the DAR wore Colonial-era attire. This annual event is hosted by the Sons of Liberty Chapter at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles. The Sons of Liberty Chapter was well represented. Also attend- ing were NSSAR Chaplain General Louis Carlson and CASSAR President Stephen Hurst. The Right Rev. Louis Carlson gave the invocation and benediction. Orange County Chapter World War II hero Walter Ehlers, the last living D-Day veteran recipient of the Medal of Honor and an adopted friend of the Orange County Chapter, died Feb. 20 at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Long Beach, Calif. Ehlers first appeared as a speaker for the monthly meet- ing of the Orange County Chapter SAR in 2007. That was when he shared his amazing story of heroism. Brothers Walter and Roland Ehlers served in the same company throughout the Sicily and North Africa campaigns. For the D-Day invasion, the Ehler brothers were dispatched to dif- ferent rifle companies as the casualty expectations were grim, and it was decided the odds were better for family members if they were spread out among other companies. Walter, who was then a staff sergeant, led his squad through the bloody water and death-littered Omaha Beach at the end of the first wave and survived the first day of the invasion unscathed. Tragically, Roland was killed in the second wave. Walter would not find out for nearly a month, when he ran into Roland's compa- ny commander. After hearing the news he walked to a From left, National Trustee C.W. Posey Jr., immediate Past President Marvin K.
