36 SAR MAGAZINE nation's first president," added Phlegar, "giving him the opportunity to share his deep love and respect of Colonial history and the appreciation he has for the accomplishments of George Washington." As our first president of the United States, Washington served two terms from 1789-1797, presiding over the drafting of the U.S. Constitution while overseeing the creation of a strong, well- financed national government. "George Washington became an international icon for liberation and nationalism following the Revolutionary War," Phlegar said, "and he is consistently ranked among the top three presidents of the United States, according to polls of both scholars and the gen- eral public." Next year's Presidents' Day Community Dinner will host either Patrick Henry or Benjamin Franklin. OHIO SOCIETY Cincinnati Chapter The 241st birthday of President William Henry Harrison was celebrated on Feb. 7 in North Bend, Ohio. The Cincinnati Chapter was on hand with local elected officials and U.S. Army Reserves Maj. Gen. Karen LeDoux, commander of the 88th Regional Support Command, and Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Robert Brady, deputy chaplain of the 88th RSC to render honors to Ohio's adopted son. While born in Virginia to a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Harrison spent his career in the Ohio area, and his home was in North Bend on the Ohio River. LeDoux represented the Office of the President by pre- senting a wreath at President Harrison's tomb. Hocking Valley Chapter In celebration of George Washington's birthday, Carl Roshong hosted members of the Hocking Valley Chapter of the OHSSAR in Lancaster, Ohio, to enjoy a Colonial repast. Many attendees dressed in period clothing and practiced their huzzahs with appropriate tankards of ale and grog. Marietta Chapter The OHSSAR Marietta Chapter celebrated Dylan Traikoff as the Ohio Society's 10,000th member since its inception. The celebration took place at the chapter's monthly meeting, March 13, at the Marietta VFW Hall. Dylan was first induct- ed into the SAR on Dec. 14, 2007, as a junior member and is the grandson of Marietta Chapter President Jean Yost. Beverly Schumacher, OHSDAR past state regent, did the original application for Dylan, plus several other youth members of several OHSSAR chapters. Western Reserve Chapter The Western Reserve Society of the OHSSAR held its annual George Washington Luncheon Feb. 22 at the Shaker Heights Country Club in Shaker Heights. More than 145 SAR members and guests from 20-plus patriotic and historical organizations gathered to celebrate George Washington's 282nd birthday. The meal featured a wonderful filet of beef, Neapolitan potatoes, green beans and salad, and a delicious cherry tart. Later, Fred Watkins presented the SAR Eagle Scout Award to Tim Imhoff, who accepted the award on behalf of his son, Thomas. The SAR Silver Good Citizenship Award was presented to John Vacha, an educator and longtime head of the Northeastern Ohio History Day Program for middle school and high school students, held each March at Case Western Reserve University. Also, longtime WRS Compatriot John H. Franklin received the SAR Bronze Distinguished Service Medal and Certificate. The highlight of the day was a speech by President George Washington (as portrayed by Dale Fellows, a member of We Made History, Mentor, Ohio) on his visit to the Northwest Territory and as general and then president of the new United States of America. After the program there was a drawing for some beautiful cherry pies. OKLAHOMA SOCIETY The Oklahoma City and Tulsa Chapters joined with the Lawton, Oklahoma Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in their 2013 Wreaths Across America Event at Fort Sill, Okla., Dec. 14, 2013.
