SPRING 2014 his talk. The audience also was surprised to hear Downing tell them that the Genesee River Gorge, across the street from the school, was the route followed by some British, Tory and Indian troops headed to Pennsylvania and the Battle of the Wyoming Valley. As it is a private school, the presenters were able to have a musket (with no ammuni- tion) and other weapons in the building. In the public school, we showed DVDs. After the presentations, the stu- dents had questions and were excited to be able to handle the items and artifacts brought along, including several from the Stillwater Battlefield of the Battle of Saratoga. The group at Greece Athena was much larger, so the compatriots were divided between two large science class- rooms to deliver a total of six presentations. The students were fascinated by the stories and involved with the presen- tations. It was particularly interesting for the presenters to learn what the students had questions about and to follow what they remembered most vividly. NORTH CAROLINA SOCIETY The 2014 Celebration of the Battle of Widow Moores Creek Bridge, below, marked the 238th anniversary of this critical, early victory for the patriots. This event has been celebrated with few misses since 1898. While the NCSSAR is a prominent leader in the event, it also works with local, state and national heritage/lineage societies. The NCSSAR makes up the larger portion of the members of the march-in column and is involved in laying wreaths at the four monuments on the trail, with the col- umn under the direction of the area SAR Color Guard com- mander. The Lower Cape Fear Chapter mans a table for ques- tions regard- ing SAR and artifacts that raise com- ments from attendees. Marquis de Lafayette Chapter The Marquis de Lafayette Chapter and the Fayetteville History Museum co-sponsored a compatriot grave marking ceremony Dec. 7, 2013, for Herbert Lutterloh (1859-1913). Compatriot Lutterloh holds the distinction of being the first citizen from Fayetteville, N.C., to join the Sons of the American Revolution, in 1912. Thus, the ceremony also com- memorated a "century of service" from Fayetteville to the SAR. It also called to remembrance the 45th anniversary of the chapter's founding in December 1968. The ceremony, below, featured a presentation of the col- ors by the chapter's color guard and a black-powder musket salute of three volleys by the chapter's Lafayette Guard, all dressed in period Revolutionary War uniforms. It was held near Lutter loh's grave in Fayetteville's historic Cross Creek Cemetery No. 1 (established in 1785). Fifteen compatriots attended and wreaths were presented for the NCSSAR, South Atlantic District, the Marquis de Lafayette Chapter and two local DAR chapters. A proclamation from the mayor of Fayetteville was recited proclaiming it Herbert Lutterloh Day. Mecklenburg Chapter A portrayer of President George Washington was the guest speaker in Charlotte on Feb. 20 as part of the Mecklenburg Chapter's annual Presidents' Day Community Dinner and Education Series. "The honor of having President Washington host a dinner for 170 guests and hear his stories and accounts of serving as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, serving as the founding father of our nation, and serving as our country's first president of the United States is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Tom Phlegar, program chairman, Mecklenburg chapter. "President Washington's interaction with the audience and his amazing ability to recount his role in numerous histori- cal events from a first-person point of view delighted, informed and entertained everybody in attendance." Each year the Mecklenburg chapter sponsors a national historical figure to visit Charlotte for this event. "This din- ner and event are open to all individuals, families, organiza- tions, groups and all ages," Phlegar said. "This year we had Cub Scouts, high school students, college students, commu- nity leaders and even a state political candidate in atten- dance. In addition, we also welcomed NSSAR Secretary General Lindsey Brock, his wife Billie, the senior national organizing secretary of the Children of the American Revolution, and NSSAR Registrar General Mike Tomme Sr. and his wife, Cilla, chaplain, National Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of the American Revolution." Kevin Grantz, a veteran historical actor from stage, film, TV and radio, portrayed President Washington. "For more than a decade, Grantz has trans- formed himself into George Washington, 'the man, not the myth,' offering a more intimate glimpse of our "George Washington" and Mecklenburg chapter member Ray Killian Jr. SPRING_14_sar28-39.indd 35 5/7/14 5:24 PM
